Lunch @ JCT

Shrimp & Grits topped off with a poached egg

Shrimp & Grits

This successful version of the dish boasts a sauce rich with sauteed onions & garlic.  The grits are rich, full-flavored and creamy.  The shrimp are plump and tender, and one perfectly poached egg finishes the dish.  This is one of the best versions of this dish that we’ve tasted in Atlanta.

Fish & Chips with sweet & sour slaw

Crisp & airy breading encases moist cod filets.  While this version of fish & chips is enjoyable, we prefer their Sunday Supper’s Sweetwater brined & fried catfish.  (mentioned here)

La Suprema Bakery

Two crumbly pecan cookies sandwiched together with pineapple jam then rolled in icing and sugar.  These tasty cookies are bigger than my fist.  YUM!

This attractive roll consists of a basic dough.  (No filling)  But, rolled in granulated sugar, this makes a great roll to serve with a cup of coffee.

This molasses piggy is quite rich with shortening.

The pastry/roll at the upper right is filled with guava jam.  It also has a basic bread dough as the “pastry”.  This was an enjoyable treat, but, we would have enjoyed it significantly more if they were a bit  more generous with the guava paste… lotsa bread & 4 bites of guava paste.

Perfect for a Quick Ravioli Fix: Figo Pasta

Ravioli di cipolla:  Carmelized Onion & Mascarpone with sweet balsamic glaze

Ravioli di Cipolla
Savory carmelized onion and mascarpone cheese filled ravioli with buttery cream sauce and balsamic glaze drizzle make for a perfect comfort food meal… Italian style.

Zucca:  Butternut squash with a touch of amaretto fill these half-moon shaped ravioli

Zucca
These butternut squash ravioli have a fair bit of sweetness to them.  Luckily, the braised radicchio (Italian Chicory) temper that sweetness.  All the best flavors of fall are stuffed in a ravioli.

Fritto Misto:  A mixed fry of calamari, shrimp and zucchini

Fritto Misto
The shrimp and calamari were cooked well with crisp exterior and tender, delicate centers.  The calamari was particulary melt-in-your-mouth tender.  But, the zucchini faired worse.  It absorbed a significant amount of oil… this was the one real failure of the meal.  It’s not surprising.  Almost all attempts to fry zucchini end in failure.

Service:  Service quality at Figo varies by location.  We prefer the Westside location.

The Best Fried Catfish in Atlanta @ JCT

Family Style Sunday Supper

A basket of mini biscuits
Served with butter and vanilla apple butter

   Deviled egg
Sprinkled with herbs and drizzled with olive oil

Farmstand salad
Fresh greens, curly endive, sliced baby carrots, paper-thin fennel, fresh corn sliced right off the cob, green beans and sliced radish drizzled with a delicate vinaigrette.

The Meat
We chose:

(Sweetwater Brined) Fried Catfish
Wow!
This catfish was out-of-this-world GOOD!  While it’s not what I would call a traditional version, our battered and fried catfish was almost unrecognizable as catfish.  The filet was huge.  The texture of the fish was delicate and flaky.  The sweetwater brining kept the filet moist and juicy, while the exterior was deliciously crisp.  I can easily say we both consider this the best fried catfish in Atlanta.  And, possibly the best fried catfish we’ve ever eaten.

Black Skillet Fried Chicken
This fried chicken stirred much debate at our table.  While, I personally wish to name it the best fried chicken in Atlanta, my honey still gives the nod to Busy Bee.  (I hate to disagree.  I’ve long been a fan of Busy Bee.  The incredible reliability and chronically perfect golden brown shell encasing moist, juicy chicken has kept it our favorite for 5  years… at least.)  But, JCT has risen to the top for me.  The quality of the chicken is unmistakable.  The deep rich chicken flavor speaks to that quality.  And, the crisp, well-seasoned coating adds even more flavor.  Combining superior crispness with light, the crisp breading has a delicate flake to it.   This delicate flaky yet still-crisp shell pushes it straight to the top for me.  And, then to gild the lily, they add a fine drizzle of honey.  Winner!  My new favorite!

Three Sides
We Chose:
Macaroni & Cheese
Smoky Benton’s bacon, butter, and cheddar… insanely rich!

Squash Casserole
Breaded and fried slices of summer squash with a sprinkling of cheese

Collard Greens
Tender, yummy greens with a bit of smoked pork for flavor

Dessert
Chocolate Cake with chocolate buttercream
Delightfully light and fluffy, yet, rich with dark chocolate flavor.

Verdict:  We love Sunday Supper @ JCT!  (For $24 per person)

The Best Fried Catfish:  Unanimously, yes!

The Best Fried Chicken:  I vote yes!

Abattoir

Potted Chicken Liver & Foie Gras Pâté with grilled bread

The touch of smoke from the grilled bread play off the creamy richness of the pâté.  All at once, rich, buttery, and delicate with an air of sweetness that just barely presents itself.  (Possibly from a reduction of armagnac, to dissipate the alcohol.)

Also, noteworthy, the pretzel in the rear was fresh from the oven.  Hot, thick-crusted and crisp with a soft, chewy interior, this perfectly fresh-out-of-the-oven pretzel puts the room temperature (resulting in a softer, chewier product) version of this pretzel sold at Star Provisions to shame.  But, now I know what a few minutes in the oven can do to these little beauties.

Bread & Butter

Halibut with shaved fennel & chanterelles

This might just be the best halibut we’ve eaten in Atlanta.  The harmony of rich butter, the freshness of the shaved fennel and a bit of earthiness from the chanterelles.  Lovely.

Abattoir Burger

The blend of beef and pork adds a distinctive richness to this burger.  And, a unique mousseline-like quality seems to result from the finely ground meat used in its preparation.
