Star Provisions — Maple Donut

Speckled with bacon and covered in maple glaze, this donut is close to perfection.  At first sight, it appears to be a standard donut.  But, the first bite welcomes you with a delicate bite, filled with air bubbles, rich with flavor and just enough substance to maintain its structure.  It possesses the perfect combination of light as air texture with enough structure to bouce back.  (Unlike its more ordinary counterparts… that deflate with the first bite)

Oh yeah, that chocolate croissant in the background was delish, too.

2006 Jackson-Triggs Vidal Icewine Proprietor's Reserve

The Good:  From taste to price, I have a ton of praise for this surprising little wine.  I snatched the bottle off the shelf of a local Whole Foods last year.  And, instantly forgot about it.  My expectations were low given the insanely low price.  I’ve never seen an icewine at this price (purchase price somewhere between $15-$20… I can’t remember).  Then, I found this bottle hiding on the wine rack.  I’ve sampled Pellar Estates, Chateau des Charmes, Inniskillin, Hillebrand, and a couple other less noteworthy.  All were over $40 and most were over $70.

First impression:  Candy Apple… if that apple were a green apple dipped into a perfectly golden brown caramel candy coating

Then, I taste green apple drowning in sourwood honey.  And, finally more complex fruit flavors shine through… sweet apricot, floral honeysuckle, melon, and the ever-present background of sweet syrupy honey with just a hint of barely burnt caramel.  The sweetness lingers on your lips long after the wine is gone. Mmm…

The Bad:    I notice more late-harvest vidal taste, texture and flavor characteristics than those of the more powerful icewines.   But, this isn’t a true negative for me.  I like the slightly lighter characteristic of this wine… a LOT.  Even so, as an icewine there is plenty of sugar here.

Smoked Duck @ Rolling Bones

The Setting:  A smallish glass-walled converted gas station creates the indoor seating space.  A covered patio with plenty of faux-vintage aluminum chairs & tables fill the superior outdoor seating area.  Though, on at least one occasion, we were asked if we wanted to contribute to a gentleman’s livelihood…. or maybe give him our food… you know…if we weren’t using it or anything.

The Staff: Very friendly

The Food:  We weren’t big fans of Rolling Bones’ original menu.  But, this first visit to taste the new offerings might convert us.  That is a qualified might.

Smoked Duck Breast/Wing — The gangly wing is a bit unsightly, but, the smoky, crisp & golden brown skin had us nibbling away.  The breast was perfection… smoky, juicy, tender, rich, meaty duck.  Now, the reason for qualifiers?  We were told that we got there at the perfect time.  The duck was fresh out of the smoker.  (Less fortunate timing may or may not effect future experiences.  We can not speak to consistency given our lucky timing.)

Trout — The trout is grilled to order.  So, not alot of smoke flavor.  But, the delicate spice, perfect drizzle of lemon, and near-perfect grilling time lent to one beautifully cooked trout fillet.

Chicken — Sadly, this was the one real failure.  The chicken was quite overdone resulting in a tough and unbearably dry chicken breast.  The thigh/leg was slightly better.

The Sauce — We opted for spicy sauce.  It was fine, but, neither one of us found it enjoyable or memorable.  It was too ketchup-y for our taste.

Verdict — Smoked Duck… Yum!  Grilled Trout… tasty!  But, next time?  It’s a mystery.

Tassa Roti

The Setting:  Converted from a small house, this charming little white building now houses a little restaurant with two small dining areas.  One room houses the buffet and a handful of tables, the second more tables and access to the wooden deck.  We choose the deck.  Large wooden picnic tables have you feeling like you’re dining with family.

The Staff:  Friendly, helpful, and busy as they keep the buffet full of freshly prepared food.

The Food:  It’s all good!  The real strength isn’t in a single dish, but, in the array of dishes that are the Trinidadian equivalent of comfort food.

Jerk Chicken, Stewed — The blend of spices, sweet & otherwise, was just about perfect.  The chicken was moist & tender.  Love it!  But, I’d love it even more if it were grilled over a wood fire instead of stewed in the oven.

Curry Chicken — I’ve never been a fan of curry chicken.  But, Tassa Roti’s version with the addition of sweet spices to the traditional curry blend make it taste of something truly special.  The multitude of spices lend an incredible complexity. And, once again, the chicken is tender and moist.

Stewed Chicken — Our least favorite, it was too mild compared to the other two chicken dishes… a simple stewed chicken in a mild tomato-y broth

Callaloo — Rich & sweet with coconut milk and pleasantly herbal

Coo Coo — A yummy cornmeal dressing with raisins… perfect paired with the jerk chicken & ULTRA SPICY habanero pepper sauce

Aloo (Potato Curry) — A hint of sweetness perfectly accents the creamy potato curry… again perfect to pair with the spicy stews.

Buss-up-shut, Paratha Roti, or Dosti Roti — multiple paper thin wheat flatbreads brushed with butter and grilled together giving a light flaky appearance.  Rich with buttery, nutty, toasty wheat flavor, what a perfect implement to sop up all the saucy goodness.

Channa — Chickpea curry with onions and spices

Star of the Day:  Tassa Roti, putting the C(aribbean) in comfort.
