Caesar! Caesar! — A Quick Lunch

The Setting:  Tables, booths, bar seating and even a small patio area, this Mellow Mushroom has a decent amount of seating.  On the afternoon of our visit, it was a bit dark and surprisingly quiet.

The Staff:  Quick and Friendly

The Food:  We were in a bit of a rush and we picked the first thing that caught our eye… Caesar! Caesar!

Wow!  This is one incredibly hearty pizza.  Caesar! Caesar! is a chicken pesto pizza with a bit of feta.  Then, after baking a hefty dose of caesar salad is heaped on top.  All of the elements were well-executed.  The pesto was applied sparingly to top the pizza (a bonus in my eyes), the crust was nicely browned, and the salad was fresh and crisp.  The one con… the salad dressing was applied to the salad with a bit of a heavy hand.

This is a tasty pizza with a ton of flavor.  But, a big appetit is needed if you plan on eating more than a slice.  It’s VERY rich and filling.  After two slices, I could have taken a nap.  (And, I was starving prior to the meal.)

Astoria Salad @ Artuzzi's

What’s my favorite salad this summer?  I don’t think I could narrow it down to just one, but, the Astoria Salad at Artuzzi’s is definitely one of my favorites.

Crisp Granny Smith apple slices, candied walnuts, strawberries, sweet baby grapes, crumbled Gorgonzola, radicchio, celery and mixed greens.  Yum!

And, the sweet little rolls brushed with butter that are served with the salad complete the meal nicely.

Samuel Adams Chocolate Bock

The first scent is sweet chocolate and malt.  The taste of burnt sugar/caramel up front is lovely.  Complex malt and vanilla undertones add to the smooth & creamy feel of it in your mouth.  Smooth, creamy and complex all at once.  The vanilla also adds to the sweetness. But, it’s a pleasant sweetness… not overwhelming.  Rich, yet, subtle.

The complimentary blend of flavors come across with a surprising delicate nature.  Each flavor unfolds beneath the foil of malt and caramel.  This allows the layers of flavor to slowly present themself before each new one takes the place of the last.

CON:  The price is a bit hard to justify with the marketplace literally bursting with high quality options.

Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence

Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence
Belgian Chocolate Stout

The scent of dark chocolate/bitter chocolate/cocoa is quickly evident and very pleasant.  The first taste reveals a deep dark bitter chocolate flavor that works beautifully with the malty tones.  Dried fruit flavors linger in the background and contribute to a wonderful depth of flavor.  Slightly muting the other flavors, but, the dried fruit flavors add a rich complexity that is very enjoyable.  And, this complexity adds to the ease of drinking.  I could easily drink a glass with no fear of tiring of the flavors.  This chocolate stout will have an incredibly wide range of food pairing options and a number of uses in sweet and savory food preparations.

I still prefer the lovely burnt caramel tones of Brooklyn Brewery’s chocolate stout and the dry bitterness of Rogue’s chocolate stout.  But, I will add this to my list of favorites.
