Things That Always Make Us Happy: Look Up! Co’m Vietnamese Grill City Farmer’s Market On Buford Highway From The Bakery Counter Bánh Patê Sô This one was still warm in the middle. For $1.59, that’s a very hearty snack or a nice little lunch if you’re on the run doing a bit of holiday shopping. Almond Croissants Again, these were delicious. We wouldn’t go so far as to say that Star Provisions, H & F Bread Co., or Alon’s should be in any way nervous. These are definitely a notch or two down from those three spots. All of those still make far superior and incredibly reliable croissants. But, these are quite good. On the first visit, the almond croissants were .99 cents each. On the second visit (a week later), they were $1.16. Actually, on our second visit, they were sold out. So, that second visit was our third attempt to purchase these almond croissants. On this visit, the lady (Let’s call her The Croissant Lady.) behind me was loading up her tray with two layers of assorted croissants from edge to edge. (They have plain. A few of the croissants have fruit fillings that I can’t remember. Pineapple is one of them. And, there’s a cheese filled one, too.) The Croissant Lady cleaned out almost all of the remaining croissant trays. Each type of croissant has one tray under a plexi dome. So, if you come behind someone like The Croissant Lady, you’re out of luck until they fill up the trays again. These are clearly popular. Beautiful Pink Snapper Chicken Balut Duck Balut We’ve purchased a couple of each on two separate occasions. City Farmers Market Best stroopwafels ever? They might be. We can’t say that just yet. (Yet.) We haven’t tried them ALL. (Yet.) But, these are definitely the best that we’ve ever tasted. EV-ER! These were so incredibly fresh. The waffle was crispy and brittle and lightly dusted with the right amount of cinnamon sugar that was mostly cinnamon and not too sweet at all. And, the caramel was chewy and lovely even without the steam of a hot beverage. 8 waffles… That’s not enough. We already want another tin. Barn egg… barn egg? Don’t you love translated ingredient lists? 446 calories each? Nah, that can’t be right. I bet they didn’t even know how to calculate calories in 1897. I’m definitely not sharing my waffle. Actually, on second thought, I never saw the bottom of this tin. I swear, I never even saw that. I had no idea there was writing on the bottom of this tin. Calories? What are those? — We’re also devouring these: Almond Croissants Mmhmm, these are really good, too. City Farmers Market Dobb’s Bar-B-Que In the bright light of day, the charm of our first visit was clearly lost. The nicest thing we can say about that burger? “No Comment.” The bun was ice cold and dense. The cheese was mostly cold and refusing to melt. The lettuce and tomato were both cold. And, the fries were cold… not luke warm… cold. BBQ Half Chicken The chicken was still mostly tender on this visit. The exception was the breast. It was more than a little bit dry and chewy. But, the real issue was the flavor of this chicken. The flavor was off… way off. Without the barbecue sauce, the flaws were excruciatingly evident. Every bite of chicken came with an overpowering salty kick to the taste buds. We’re pretty sure that this was due to an over-brining of the chicken. Another horrible side effect of the overly salty chicken was a lingering metallic taste… possibly from iodized salt? (Once, we bought pieces of chicken with this flavor at a grocery store. Once. Never again. Ever since, we’ve carefully avoided the inexpensive brands of chicken. We’re sure some companies in a scheme to make money would love to sell salt water bloated chicken pieces. We hear salt water comes pretty cheap.) The camp stew was rather unpleasant. We believe some sort of bean had either been ground into bits in there or this was boiled to the point of mush. It had the texture of gritty baby food. Most of the sides must be ordered separately. The plate or platters come with a side salad and fries. This time the dressing was added without our consent. That’s not a big deal. No one really digs eagerly into an iceberg lettuce salad with excitement. And, we weren’t eager for another round of spongy (not fresh) iceberg lettuce. We didn’t comment on this last time. We thought that it might be a fluke. But, on two separate visits, the lettuce has been a bit less than fresh. Second visit… Sadly, it was charm-free. We seriously doubt there will be a third visit.
On the far right side of the park… — Church’s Spicy Fried Chicken & Biscuit Deep Fried Okra Spicy Cheese Bombers It was all surprisingly good. But, we should qualify that with the fact that we were absolutely ravenous. Everything was fresh out of the fryer, piping hot, and not too greasy. Crystal Beach It’s just us and the gulls. How can we not love that? Afternoon… to sunset… Camille’s At Sunset Camille’s Rye Manhattan & The Camille Hendrick’s, St Germain, Fresh Grapefruit Juice, & After a day at the beach, we were both seriously craving The Camille. This generously poured drink with the perfect bite of fresh, tart grapefruit had us smiling and very happy before the first bite of food hit the table. We’ll definitely be back for more cocktails at Camille’s. Gulf Shrimp & Scallops There was a butternut squash mash and candied chunks of butternut squash pieces in the assortment of vegetables topping the mashed butternut squash. Presentation might be a bit rustic. But, the browned buttered bits made up for that. Full of flavor and gloriously tender, both scallop and shrimp were memorable. Filet Mignon Dusted With Porcini Mushrooms Smashed Potatoes & Rosemary Jus Key Lime Pie Finishes Us Off For The Day — A bright new day… And, a quick goodbye to the beach for 2015… …or is it? Someone was baking in the sun of a brutally cloudless sky in his dark polo. (Blatantly obvious tip from someone who should know better spending his life all the way through college on Florida beaches, don’t wear dark colors to the beach. Does this rookie mistake make someone an official Atlantan now? We think it might.) So, we had to move into the shade. Crab Cake On Fried Green Tomato And, it was about 90% fresh, sweet crab. Deep Fried Gulf Bay Scallops Every scallop was lovely. Sweet, incredibly tender and delicious, these were almost as sweet as fresh, straight out of the sea, melting on your tongue raw scallops. If they’re this delicious next time, this might be a new tradition. Hushpuppies & Cole Slaw And, no tourist-y crab trap visit is complete without a bucket of sweet Bacardi rum punch… Voodoo…something… — Then… Jackson Blue Those black specks are hundreds of fish. Blue gill, sunfish, catfish, some sort of trout and a few others we didn’t recognize. To Be Continued… Scouting out the area on the first afternoon… Then… Bright and early on a misty day… With all the shadows, it’s hard to see just how clear it is. But, it is crystal clear… gin clear… Ginnie Springs… The Dive Shop At Ginnie Springs We made a friend or two… Hello, #29. Arby’s Spicy Jalapeño Brisket — Then… Down another short path… Gator’s Dockside Gator Tail Battered Bites of Gator Tail This was one huge platter of gator bites. As expected, they were crispy and tender. But, this batch at Gator’s Dockside was a bit fishier than all of the other times that we’ve eaten deep fried gator. And, we’ve had quite a few over the years. Dozens of TVs showing every football game at least twice… and a few other sporting events thrown in for good measure. Wings The wings were pretty great. They’re gigantic and tasty. They’re crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and full of flavor. And, best of all, they’re nicely sauced without being over-sauced. Right down to the very last bite, each wing had plenty of crispy bits. The platter in back holds the Gator’s Scooter Sauce’d wings. The other has deep fried and grilled jerk wings. We both preferred the deep fried and grilled wings. But, we were hoping for a spicier jerk sauce. Sweet Potato Fries & Blue Cheese Sauce 21 Sauces Lovely… period. To Be Continued… Santa Rosa & Destin Just another day… …or two at the beach Happy Holiday Weekend! Aladdin’s Mediterranean Grill & Deli Restaurant Chicken… And Beef Every bite was delicious, again. We’ve loved Aladdin’s for years. And, we’re still loving it. Aladdin’s Mediterranean Grill Dobb’s BBQ The ribs were a bit dry. Chopped Beef A small amount of Dobb’s barbecue sauce was chopped into the beef. Normally, we’d hate this. But, we didn’t. Though, we’d prefer to taste the beef without the addition of the sauce. Smoked Chicken (Check out those seriously old school light mint plates in the back.) What’s another thing we’d normally hate? The barbecue sauce poured over and drowning every inch of the chicken. But, again, we didn’t… probably due to the incredibly mild nature of Dobb’s barbecue sauce. We will add an important note. This chicken was smoky and tender. It didn’t need any of that sauce at all. Side Salads Dothan Alabama’s Oldest Restaurant Open: Tuesday-Sunday from 10am – 9pm Dobb’s Bar B Que |
