Halloween Whopper – Burger King

The A.1. Halloween Whopper at Burger King

We confess.  We’re still children at heart.  So, we had to try a black bunned halloween whopper.  (Or, to be completely honest, we bought two.  We weren’t in the mood to share.  Though, in retrospect, we probably should have.  Whoppers are pretty big.  Unless you’re starving, they’re really too big.)

We’ll also admit to the fact that it was sort of twisted and fun eating a black whopper.  Mass produced junk food that’s this bad should have an ominous tone, right?  Ominous looking black bun?  Check.

So how was it?

Yep, it tastes like a whopper.  Supposedly, the black bun has the flavor of A1 steak sauce baked into it.  But, to our knowledge we’ve never purchased or tasted A.1. steak sauce before.  So, who knows?  There’s a definite flavor to that dark black bun.  It’s sort of barbecue-y with a touch of something grilled or charred.

(Note:  We’re pretty sure both of our halloween whoppers had only a very small amount of mayo on them.  And, this was probably a good thing.  We’re guessing we would’ve liked this whopper a lot less with both mayo AND A.1. steak sauce.  That would just be too much wet sauce for that bun.  Even with very little mayo on ours, it was quite soft and wet just a few bites into it.)

Better than a regular whopper?  Ok, sure.  We suppose so.  But, then again, isn’t pretty much everything better than a regular whopper?

Fiesta Tapatia

We both loved this bar.

Creamy Coconut
La Tapatia

Rich & creamy, this was good, too.  But, we both wanted to maintain possession of the cantaloupe fruit bar.  The coconut was nice for a random bite in between bites of the cantaloupe.

Tiny slivers of shredded brussel sprouts add a pleasantly mild bitterness.  We really love this dish.  We went back twice in one week for a second taste.  And, now, we’re craving a third.

Le Mekong

House Salad

We swear.  That’s what the menu says!  Le Mekong will charm you with equal parts of approachable and delicious.  This was another meal to remember.

Goi Dac Biet

By any name, we love it.  A light drizzle of Vietnamese style vinaigrette tops shredded green papaya, green apple, carrot, white shrimp, shredded herbs, deep fried onion and shallot slivers and crushed roasted peanuts.

Yet again, it’s quite good.

Betel Leaf Rolls

Vietnamese Crepe

Banh Xeo

We’re already craving a return visit for more of this.  And, we won’t mind the drive out there one little bit.

It’s hard to see under those crispy edges.  But, this was absolutely bursting with bean sprouts, onion slivers and shredded chicken.

Super crisp and delicious, the crepe was absolutely incredible.

A mountain of herbs…

…and an even bigger mountain of fresh frilly lettuce and Vietnamese dipping (fish) sauce.

Cap’n Crunch Delights

Taco Bell’s Cap’n Crunch Delights

Cinnabon Delights

“Wow, these are REALLY greasy!”

So, the slogan on the bag says, “You Can Taste It!”

What exactly are we tasting?  The oil?  Lots and LOTS of oil… That’s what we’re tasting.  If these weren’t literally saturated and dripping oil, it’s possible that they might have been very slightly tasty (if you’re looking for a super sweet Cap’n Crunch Berries flavor).   But, they were so completely soaked with oil that they were inedible.

But, wait!  As if that’s not enough oil in one bite, each bite is also filled with greasy, sugary frosting!

Yuck.

To be fair, we cut into several of them.  Each one was equally saturated with oil.  There’s just no excuse for something this bad.  These “pastries” might just be the worst thing that we’ve ever tasted.  If they’re not the very worst, they’re certainly topping our list of “NEVER AGAIN!”

We also tried the loaded grillers.  There are three types:  Chipotle (mild), Habanero (hot), and Ghost Pepper (fiery).  Basically, they taste like everything that you’ve come to expect from the Taco Bell menu.  The ghost pepper is a little bit spicy.  But, it’s no where near the level of spicy heat that you’d expect from something with the name “ghost pepper” attached to it.

If we were hungry (no scratch that, if we’re ABSOLUTELY STARVING!) with fast food as our only available option, we might consider eating another griller.  And, in that very limited case scenario, we might choose to eat the Habanero Griller or the Ghost Pepper griller…. over the option of going hungry.

Golden BBQ

Salt & Pepper Jumbo Shrimp

Light and crisp, these were divine.  The beautifully tender shrimp are allowed to shine brightly under their delicate shell.

Peking Pork Chops

Barely sweet and sour pork with onions touched delicately with a high heat char, this was equally delicious.

We both loved it.

Every bite of tender, saucy pork begged to be eaten.

When we mentioned how we both liked just the tiniest bit of sugar in our chrysanthemum tea, the lovely lady in charge lit up with happy understanding.  She rushed off to make us the perfect pot.  And, it was… the perfect pot of chrysanthemum tea.  Made with her love and care of the ingredient, it had to be.  We couldn’t thank her enough for her hospitality and one perfect pot of tea that we will never forget.

We will return each and every chance we get.  It would be an understatement to say we loved every bite.  We loved our food and we were charmed by the care of the staff.

Loved it all!

Moonie’s Texas BBQ

Moonie’s BBQ Ribs

Delicious, again

So very tender and smoky, we enjoyed every bite.

We love it when the taste of a favorite food exceeds our memories.  And, Moonie’s BBQ exceeded our expectations…again.

And, the brisket chili (loaded with brisket) was densely rich, beefy, smoky, and delicious.  It’s everything you want brisket chili to be.

Pulled Pork…

…and even the smoked, chopped chicken breast was incredibly moist and tender.  It’s  really hard to believe that such a lean chicken breast can be so melt-in-your-mouth tender.

We took a pound of smoked turkey to go.  And, it made some gorgeous sandwiches that we enjoyed for days.

After a little bit of careful repackaging, it was still deliciously moist and tender on the second day.

Ping’s Place

Beef Noodle Soup at Ping’s Place

Cool fall weather means that it’s time for some soup love.

Ping’s beef noodle soup?  Oh yes, it’s more than worthy of some love.  There’s just so much to love in this gorgeous bowl of soup.

Layers of fresh herbs and vegetables underline the beefy richness of the broth.

Every bite of beef is silky smooth, tender and an explosion of intense beef.

…and the noodles

Mmm, the noodles…  They’re richly creamy and tender with a nice bite.

We’re regulars at Ping’s Place.  And, we doubt that will ever change.  Beef noodle soup at Ping’s just makes us happy.

Tumbleweed’s Smokehouse BBQ

Tumbleweed’s Smokehouse BBQ

Ribs & Pulled Pork

So smoky…

…and tender

And, that goes for both ribs and pulled pork.  We enjoyed both.  But, in the end the ribs were our favorite.

There are two things that will guarantee a return visit the next time that we’re in the area.  Actually, make that three things!  The ribs, the pulled pork, and the okra will bring us back to Tumbleweed’s.

And, the fried okra was the one and only thing that could distract us from the tender smoky meat.

The fried okra was incredible.  That’s fresh okra in there.  Super crisp on the outside, tender and tender on the inside, we devoured it.
