Cabin Fever
New Holland Brown Ale
(Craft Brewed in Holland, Michigan)
Toasty nut, sweet dark-roasted malt (but, not too sweet), earthy, well-rounded and smooth, this is a really great brown ale for winter. It’s a bit like a porter without all the heaviness. Very drinkable.
Cabin Fever, anyone?

Siggi’s Icelandic Style Skyr
So rich, dense and creamy, it’s almost impossible to fathom that this is a fat free yogurt.
Love it! Seriously.
We’ve tried the Mango & Pineapple and coconut, too. Both are tasty. But, we LOVED the pomegranate & passionfruit that’s mostly tart with just a touch of sweetness.

Tripe In Spicy Chili Oil
(Peeking Into The Frame In The Far Left Corner)
We even tried a bite or two of the tripe in hot chili oil. There’s a tiny glimpse of it in the very far left corner. Normally, we’re not huge fans of buffet food. But, this meal was a refreshing change of pace. The homestyle dishes were a pleasure to taste. Not everyone wants to dive head first into a platter of tripe. We happily took this opportunity to take a little taste and be pleasantly surprised.
Just before our bursting point, we were each offered a wedge of scallion pancake. It was delicious in its simplicity. And, it was a tasty last bite.

Cock ‘n Bull Ginger Beer Moscow Mule
Love, love, Love! …this ginger beer!
Lonerider Shotgun Betty Hefeweizen
The pint glass, lime slices, vodka and ice wait patiently for the Cock ‘n Bull ginger beer.
Fresh with a nice spicy bite, this ginger beer makes a lovely cocktail.
Fried Artichoke Hearts
Build Your Own Burger
We topped this burger with cheddar, bacon, jalapeños, and a fried egg.
Halvsies
(Half of the burger and half of the fries)
After the very generous order of fried artichoke hearts, we had to share this beautifully cooked to blushing pink medium burger. That’s a half pound Angus beef burger up there with that mountain (half mountain) of sweet potato fries.

Fried Oysters
Deep Fried Jumbo Oysters
(On The House Specialties Page)
This large platter was covered with over 20 plump, beautifully fried oysters.
Kung Pao Frog Legs
Loaded With Spicy Peppers, Sliced Onions, Ginger,
And Roasted Cashews
So many deliciously roasted cashews, this was another generous platter of food. Both dishes left us eager to try more.
But, what should we try next time?
Oysters with BBQ pork hot pot, braised spare ribs with bitter melon. clams with black bean sauce or Chinese donut stuffed with shrimp…
That’s a decision for another day.

Crispy Calamari
But, wait! That’s not all. There are slivers of onions, jalapeños, and…
Paper Thin Lemon Slices
Super thin, these deep-fried wafers of lemon were an incredibly delightful bite to alternate with the tender little rings and crispy tentacles.
Love it.
Kraut & Beer Brats
Not a favorite, these were a bit over-cooked and too chewy to enjoy. But, maybe this was a fluke. We’d probably give them one more chance on another day.

Seafood Cobb
This salad comes complete with tender crawfish, scallops, baby shrimp, bacon, boiled egg slices, grape tomatoes and bleu cheese.
If you ignore most of the bacon and dress the salad lightly with the lemon vinaigrette, this could be a light(er) meal. Give in to temptation and eat those crispy bits of crumbled bacon and all bets are off.
Salmon With Apple Cider Reduction
The crispy golden brown sear on the exterior yields to your fork. It reveals salmon cooked to that perfect moment in time that’s halfway between medium rare and medium. Delicate, flaky and moist, it was pure pleasure to eat.
The bread basket includes a couple squares of sweet crumb cake rich with winter spices. Those were two lovely last bites.
If you can sneak away for a long lunch, this is a great place to take shelter from that never-ending chill that’s floating in the air.

Tutta Guarnita & Mt Vesuvius
Avellino’s shapes their dough into a rectangle for their large pizza. We chose a fifty/fifty Tutta Guarnita and Mt Vesuvius. Next time, we’ll probably get two smalls. We enjoyed the fluffy, bubbly edges with cracker-y crisp, airy bubbles.
On the tail end of a cold, we decided to play it safe. Next time, we’ll go for the habanaro peppers. On this visit, we let slivers of jalapeños stand in for them.
Good flavor and structure, all of those airy bubbles keep the pleasantly chewy dough bouncy and light. We can’t wait to try Avellino’s again when all of our senses return to normal.

Tamale Topped With Shredded Mojo Pork
Cuban Style Ribs, Maduros, Griddle Toasted Cuban Bread,
And Black Beans & Rice
Subdued, complex heat with Island spices and a background of barely there sweetness, these were smoky pork heaven. And, those stewed kidney beans rich with pork were another version of rice and beans to love.
More Shredded Mojo Pork, Maduros, & Yellow Rice
It was all good …so very good.
We love Florida. Well, let’s be more specific. We love the parts of Florida where great Cuban food can be found at almost every street corner.

Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger With Baked Sweet Potato
(The baked sweet potato makes a great quasi-dessert.)
Yes, Outback is an evil chain. Yes, those chains offer an incredible degree of variability from pretty darn good to downright yucky and ew-y! It’s a bit of a gamble. But, we’d still choose Outback over McDonald’s every day of the week. If they’re not mobbed, most Outbacks can get you in and out pretty quick. And, we were feelin’ lucky.
Blushing Pink Medium Goodness
Statistically, the odds really are in your favor. And, this was a downright GOOD burger. Even a bad Outback burger will be more enjoyable than a standard McDonald’s or BK burger each and every time. We’re willing to add half an hour to forty-five minutes to our road trip.
Tip # 1 — We only order the burger. Ever. Period!
(We’re sure the steaks are perfectly “fine”. Thanks, but no thanks to that.)
Tip #2 — Ready? Take notes. This tip is crucial to a successful Outback dining experience. If you want a medium burger at Outback, order it medium rare. It’s really that simple.
iExit
We really enjoyed using iExit on our last roadtrip. It might not be perfect and we did hit one or two restaurants that were no longer in business. But, it still made planning stretching breaks, restroom breaks, and food stops easier.
