Root Down — Denver Airport Food

Bacon Cheese Burger

Airport food is shaping up quite nicely.

For a really decent airport burger, $20 isn’t that bad.

Crispy Skin Trout

With Grilled Okra & Onions

Crispy skin with tender delicate flakes, this was very nicely done.

An entire filleted trout was more than generous to begin this dish.  Then, top that with around 8 whole grilled okra and a rich lemon butter sauce.  Lightly toasted sprigs of thyme complete the picture.

Sapelo Island Clams

These delicately cooked clams were swimming in a sauce of brown ale, cream, sautéed sausage, onion and tomato.  Labeled as a starter, one of us happily made a meal of it.

Portabello Fries

Paired with garlic aioli, this was another very generous serving.

Don’t let the nearly deserted strip mall fool you.

If you’re in the area (The Shoppes At Webb Gin), we seriously doubt you can do better than The Georgia Pine.

Jaemor Farms

Tip # 1
Don’t wait until the weekend before Halloween to go pumpkin shopping.

This field was previously packed with pumpkins.

These were the last pumpkins to remain homeless.

But, there’s still plenty for the kids to do.

There’s a hay ride and a 30+ minute corn maze to solve.

Tip # 2
Commit 2013 Corn Maze Map To Memory.

There’s a school bus to shoot at with an apple cannon.  And, there’s a big (from the kid’s point of view) downhill slide, too.

When you’re done wandering around, head over to the shack with the pink pigs…

…all over it.

Get in line.  THEN, decide what you want.  Then, wait.

…and wait some more.

Try and find a seat.

After all of that, it’s finally time to check out the market.

Arkansas Black Apples

We found these Arkansas Black apples that we’ve never tried.  They were super crisp, very hard, dense, and thick-skinned.  Equal parts tart and sweet, there was good balance that underlined the apple flavor without overwhelming it.  And, there was a unique flavor that can only be described as starchy.  We’d be willing to bet that these apples make a great pie.  And, we’re told that these apples grow darker as they age.

Gorgeous Squash

Jalapeño Cheddar Bread

Lauri Jo’s Blackberry Pepper Jelly

…or blueberry …or Mayhaw

Caramel Iced Pound Cake
(Pecan pralines, dark chocolate covered pecans, and a Sioux City Root Beer, too)

It was all good.  But…

The caramel iced pound cake was the real winner.  Rich, slightly dense and still incredibly tender, this cake had the texture and flavor of a really old-fashioned pound cake.

Georgia Belle Peach Preserves

Tip # 3
Don’t leave without at least one jar of the Georgia Belle Peach Preserves.

This white fleshed peach has an incredible depth of flavor.  Fresh, these peaches have a seductive aroma.  In the jar, the essence of the peach is captured with an almost floral, perfume-y (in the very best way) sweetness.

Star Provisions — The Dossant

Star Provision’s Chocolate Hazelnut Dossant

Layer upon layer of buttery laminated dough like the best croissant… But, this dossant is glistening with a paper-thin crispy creme brûlée caramel shell.  And, it’s stuffed with a rich chocolate hazelnut ganache, sprinkled with ground hazelnuts, and drizzled with chocolate.

Can you imagine filling the hole of a croissant doughnut with the best deep, dark chocolate hazelnut truffle?  It’s better than that.  The brittle layer of caramelized sugar adds that extra special something that makes the sum greater than its delicious parts.

The Mocha Buttercream Dossant

Are they torching the sugar right on the dossant?  Whatever it is that they do it.  We sure hope they keep on doing it.  These are fluffy mountains of divine pastry goodness.

The Pastry Cream Dossant

This might be the simplest version.  But, it’s every bit as delicious as the other two.

You can try to take them with you.  Just be sure to eat them while the caramel shell is brittle perfection.

The Caramel Pecan Sticky Bun

One giant bun filled this box.  And, we do mean FILLED.  Size only matters when it’s got the substance to back it up.  This sticky bun sure does.  It’s covered in beautifully roasted pecans and drizzled with dark caramel.

It was too good.

Benchwarmers — Atlanta

Buffalo Chicken Fingers

Ah, Benchwarmers…

Or, as someone likes to say…  BellyF*@kers!

Sometimes, you just want some crispy chicken tenders and real skin on fries.  This is the place.  Those chicken tenders are tender strips of chicken breast in a perfectly crisp shell.

Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese

Yes, this is one trashy mess.  And, we love them for it.

Nothing Fancy

It’s just great bar food with a comfort food twist.

This is where to go when it’s time to grab a beer and watch the game.

MJ Korean Taco & Wings

Super Crispy Chicken Wings With Kickin’ MJ Sauce

Everything about these (big) wings were perfection.  They were super crisp on the outside with tender, juicy meat on the inside.  And, the sauce?  So good, it was a rich balance of savory, spicy, a little garlic, a touch of sweetness and soy.  The soy added just the right depth without being too salty.  Honestly, it was just a really great wing sauce.

Wings might not be a pretty food.  But, they sure are crispy and delicious.

Three Tacos
(Steak Bulgogi, Pork Dakgogi, & Fried Mashed Potato)

The beef and pork were rich and full of flavor.  We ignored them a bit.  We were just too busy devouring those wings.  The one standout was the sweetness.  They were very tasty.  But, they might be a touch too sweet for us.  We’d still happily give them a second chance any day of the week.

The fried mashed potato taco was a tasty bite of crispy carb overload.

Bi Bim Sub

Steak bulgogi, fried egg, lettuce, tomato, cucumber & Korean chili sauce.  Next time, we’d add a lot more Korean chili sauce.  This was tasty, too.  But, it needed more chili sauce to compete with the sweetness of the steak bulgogi.

Parmesan Fries

These must be eaten fast.  They’re a crazy-rich sloppy good mess when they’re crispy.  But, when they get soggy and cold… not so much.

A Generous Mountain Of Perilla Leaves & Other Herbs

Our giant platter was overflowing with a huge assortment of herbs.  Mint, Thai basil, cilantro, perilla leaves, and smooth, glossy heart shaped betel leaves were among the mountain of herbs.

Sizzling Chicken Curry

Crispy breaded chicken was topped with a Thai curry sauce that bubbled and sizzled on its piping hot cast iron platter.  It was full of Thai basil, sliced onion, red and green sweet peppers.  This will be a craving as the days grow cooler.  We’re sure of it.

Eggs Benedict With Country Ham

What makes a perfect poached egg?

The interior should be rich and creamy bordering on custardy with just a touch of firm yellow clinging to the tender whites.  These were perfect.

Beautiful Crispy Bacon

Dancing Goat coffee, too?  All of these delicious pieces create one absolutely perfect breakfast.  And, they’re dishing up these gorgeous dishes consistently.  Love it.
