Chicken & Waffles

In our experience, the waffles always play second fiddle to the fried chicken.  That was not the case here.  These waffles took center stage for us.  Super crisp and a bit dense, we both enjoyed the richness of these waffles.  No additional butter was needed.  We simply added a light drizzle of sorghum syrup and let the waffles shine.

All of that waffle praise doesn’t come lightly.  Neither one of us are real waffle fans.  So, that’s really saying something.  It’s even higher praise after one taste of the chicken.  The fried chicken breast offered plenty of flavor with a nice dose of black pepper in its crispy shell.  Crispy on the outside with a moist and tender interior, this is one brunch we’d love to repeat in the very near future.

Shrimp & Crab Po’Boy

This sandwich was filled with crispy plump shrimp, slivers of shallot and a mound of creamy crab spread on the thick slices of toasted bread.  The spicing is quite mild.  We found this to be a plus.  A spicier kick could have easily hidden the delicate flavor of crab and the lovely bread.  All of the flavors blend well.  Yet, each element contributes to the whole.  All in all, this was a fabulous brunch-time sandwich.

A peek in the mirror shows a nearly packed house.

Next time:  Sprout Burger? Hmmm….

That Pie Place

Italian Sausage & Pulled Pork Savory Pies

The Italian Sausage

Sausage, provolone, peppers and onions stuffed inside a flaky pastry shell.

Meat Lover’s Pie

Bacon, ham, pepperoni, sausage, mozzarella cheese and chunky pizza sauce fill this pie.

Pulled Pork Pie

Tender, shredded pulled pork blended with either a tangy, Carolina style barbecue sauce or a sweet Kansas City style barbecue.  For this pie, we chose the Kansas City style sauce.

Quite tasty, we enjoyed the BBQ and the meat lover’s pies the most out of the three.  And, we’re eager to return and give the buffalo chicken pie a taste.  But, next time, we’ll stay there to eat our savory hand pies.  They didn’t handle the drive home as well as we’d hoped they might.  All of our pies were a bit soft and a touch soggy.

The Elvis Pie

Take warm banana pudding and add a touch of peanut butter and chocolate.  Then, stuff all of it in a buttery pie crust to push it over the top and make it truly decadent.  This might not be the prettiest of foods.  As a matter of fact, it’s the literal definition of a hot mess.  Who cares?  It’s one hot mess we want to eat.  It’s too tasty for words and it was easily our favorite of the bunch.

S’more Pie

We both thought they could have been a bit more generous with the brownie and marshmallow.  Even though this pie felt dominated by the crust, we’d be willing to give it another chance.

To sum up:

Tasty stuff jammed in buttery, flaky pie crust?  Yup, you got it.  But, eat your pies at That Pie Place or they’re likely to be a bit soft and soggy.  We’ll be back to try that soon.

Farm Burger’s Chicken Pot Pie Fritters

Chicken Pot Pie Fritters with Sherry-Date Barbecue Sauce

They might not look like much.  But, every time we order them, someone stuffs up on them and then she can’t finish her burger.  These are more than a meal if you try to eat all three by your lonesome.  (The other sauce?  Our best guess is some sort of creamy mustard.)

Little bits of carrots and green veggies round out the flavors of chicken soup in croquette form.

Posole Roja

So much pork…

Tender, shredded pork dominated (in the best possible way) the dish with a touch of hominy playing a supporting role.  This was a comforting bowl of all things warm and good on a cold day.  We can’t think of a better way to take the chill out of a never-ending winter.

Add Wild Heaven beer, our day just got better.

Trout With Maple Pecan Butter & Butternut Squash Mash

The trout was lovely, delicate and tasty.  Pecan butter brings just the right touch of nutty richness.  But, it’s that side of creamy mashed butternut squash that we fought over.  We took that generous mound of pecan maple butter and we let it melt all over that potato alternative.  We’ll happily take this butternut squash over potato any day of the week.

If you’re in the area, pull up a chair and stay awhile.

A Huge Mess Of Masala Fries

Super crisp and cooked to a deep, dark golden brown, that’s just the way we like it.

Tossed With Plenty of Chopped Cilantro

The fresh, heady scent of green made these fries even more appealing.  A mild tomato chutney on the side completed the picture.  For those who want it hot, there’s a spicier chutney already waiting for you  on the table.

Kheema Pav (Or, Sloppy Jai With Fried Okra)

Rich lamb hash stewed with tomatoes, ginger, and spices.  Top it with fresh cilantro, red onion, and a little drizzle of green chutney and yogurt.  We both loved it.

Slivers of Fried Okra

Shaved thin and fried to a crisp, the thin shards of crispy okra shatter delicately under your bite.  Then, we were hit with a bursts of fresh citrus that made it all even better.  It’s a fried dish that’s really alive with flavor.  The fresh green and acid wake up what would otherwise be just another fried vegetable.  This was much more than that.

Fresh bits of cilantro, still bright with color… it was really quite good.

Samosa Chaat

Here, two cumin spiced potato samosas are dressed with tamarind and green chutney.  Garnished with red onions and fresh cilantro, it all sits in a bowl of comforting chickpea stew.  This is a favorite dish of ours.  And, it’s done beautifully at Chai Pani.  Make it a touch spicier, and this could easily become one of our all-time favorite versions.

We know these were freshly made.  How do we know?  Because even under those sauces, that pastry was feathery light and crisp.

Chai Tea & Honey

Always welcome on a cold day, this was a great way to fight the wicked chill in the air.

Lime Ricky?  Next time…

Or, maybe a Gin Ricky… Somehow, the cocktail menu didn’t make it to our table.  But, that’s ok.  It’s a great excuse to make another visit.  That visit will most definitely be sooner rather than later.

Daily Specials, too.

When we arrived, almost every table was full.

By 3:30pm, it got a bit quieter.

Revolution Doughnuts

Pistachio & Orange

Again, all of our doughnuts were so incredibly delicious.  We really had a hard time picking a favorite.  But, we’re both in love with the pistachio orange.  The bright burst of orange flavor was the perfect accent to rich fried dough and fresh pistachios.

Gorgeous bubbles add lightness.  Revolution doughnuts are the perfect combination of rich and light.  Plenty of bubbles keep the dough fluffy, light and airy.  Yet, these doughnuts aren’t so full of air that you feel you’ve eaten nothing but a mouth full of air covered in sugar glaze.  Every bite blends rich, yeasty artisan quality dough with beautifully crafted, flavor packed glazes.

Toasted Almond Cake

Fighting for top spot was the toasted almond cake.   This is a baked cake doughnut drowning in the best way with freshly toasted almonds and sweet almond glaze.  It’s so good you don’t miss the fried dough one little bit.

Tender crumbs with buttery richness, the toasted almonds added depth and complexity.

Salted Caramel Bacon, Gingerbread, And A Big Ole Apple Fritter

Yes, we did say big and we meant it.

Now, do you see why it was so hard to pick a favorite.  Each doughnut was delicious in its own right.  The gingerbread fried cake doughnut deserves an honorable mention.  If not for the stiff competition (and by this we mean to say “at any other doughnut shop”), this would have been an easy favorite.

Richly crafted dough, tender apple bits, cinnamon, and sweet glaze.  All of the usual suspects were present and added to the flavor party.

That’s a whole lotta yum on one plate.

From the moment we arrived until we left, there was a nonstop line out the door.  As a matter of fact, when we arrived at 8:03am the line was already out the door.  We were happy to wait.  And, it was well worth every second.

They really do have a bit of everything.  From yeast, to cake, to baked cake doughnuts, what more could you want?  Good coffee?  Check.  Our favorite was the Full City Roast Revolution Blend.  Deep, dark, rich and complex, it stands up to the decadent richness of these fine doughnuts.

We were one day too early for their new Crumb Cake doughnuts.  They just started serving those on Monday.  But, we’ll be back!  Of that, you can be sure.

Pizzeria Vesuvius

Bone Lick BBQ Pizza with Fried Collards

So good… it’s all about the toppings here.

Crispy, salted deep-fried collards lend a hearty crunch.  It makes a perfect companion to the Bone Lick BBQ’s tangy pulled pork.  Just the right touch of vinegar and black pepper in the barbecue sauce bring this pizza to life.  To put it simply, we enjoyed each and every bite.

The Fico

This pizza was generously piled with relatively thick slices of prosciutto and plenty of fig jam.  If we wanted to be picky, we might say they were a bit too generous with the fig jam.  Still, it was a very tasty pie.

Two Styles:  Neapolitan or New York

Want to choose your own?  They have plenty of lovely options.

Jack Rudy Small Batch Tonic

Instructions for a Gin & (Rudy) tonic grace the side of the bottle.

Ransom Old Tom Gin

This old tom gin is more than just a pretty bottle.  It’s barrel aged and flavored with juniper berries, orange & lemon peel, coriander, cardamom & angelica root.

Jack Rudy Tonic & Ransom Old Tom Gin

Two beautifully complex blend of flavors, they each deserve to be savored on their own.  Straight, on the rocks, or with a twist of orange, other citrus rind?  It’s your choice.  Just be sure to enjoy the flavors on their own before you choose to embellish an already complex blend of aromatics.

We also found the Tovolo sphere mold set (set of 2 molds) at H&F Bottle Shop.  Tovolo’s sphere feels bigger than its 2 and a half inch size.  They really are worth the slight effort it takes to make them.

The two inch tapered ice squares felt significantly smaller.  As a matter of fact, they felt downright wimpy by comparison.  We’ll be keeping a container of ice spheres in the freezer from now on.  We like to be prepared. You never know when the urge for an iced cocktail might strike.

River Street Sweets

Cashew Turtle

Simple and delicious, put the freshest cashews together with soft, creamy caramel and milky dark chocolate.  It’s a good thing we only bought one.

Chocolate Covered Praline Blob

We’re not big praline fans.  It’s just too much sugar.  What if you cover it in chocolate?  Now you’re talking.  We’re in.  It doesn’t hurt one tiny little bit at all that those pecans are ridiculously fresh and tender.

If you can dip it in dark, milk or white chocolate, River Street Sweets probably has it.
