Bavarian Rye @ YDFM

Your Dekalb Farmer’s Market Bavarian Rye

We’re still not in love with the bakery section at YDFM.  But, they’ve added a few new (and a few other new-ish) baked goods that we do enjoy.  This Bavarian rye is one of them.  This loaf was a bit too moist.  We’re guessing it could have used another few minutes in the oven.  We’ll be trying it again, though.  That’s for sure.  We were so preoccupied looking for one of the last loaves of Bavarian rye, we completely forgot to pick up one of the new loaves that we sampled.  Oh well, there’s always next time.

Coarse grains of rye and caraway add a bit of texture and bite.

And, it’s really quite nice with their rare roast beef.

The General Muir — Bagels

The General Muir’s Sesame Bagel

We would have preferred poppy.  But, beggars can’t be choosers.  Even after an early lunch, the bagels were almost gone by the end of our meal.  So, go early!

What separates a good bagel from a great bagel?  It’s not something that’s easily put into words.  But, there is a certain feel and touch.  It’s a hard crackly exterior with a moist, yet chewy interior.  The interior should not be heavy or clunky.  It should be  soft, with a dense crumb and possess a mature flavor.  It should not under ANY circumstances taste doughy or flour-y.

The General Muir’s Salt Bagels

These salt bagels offer a glimpse to that which is impossible to put to words.  Do you see those glossy, thin bubbles?  You sink your knife into a bagel like this and there’s an extremely satisfying crackle-y crisp crunch.  Those thin bubbles shatter and crunch loudly yeilding to the moist interior.

Plenty of bubbles dot the interior.

These were three of the best bagels we’ve had in a REALLY long time.

Midnight Snacktime?  They were still crackle-y crisp, delicious and beautiful.

The Cortado

A pleasant boost to start the meal.

Great, chunky ice for the drinks…

Boylan’s Birch Beer…

…And, Dr Brown’s Cel-Ray

Chopped Liver

More, please.

All of the bits and pieces were divine in their own right.  But, the sum of those parts deserve even higher praise.  Each piece added something special, even the salt crystals.

An Assortment of Pickles

We couldn’t keep our hands off of them.

Corned Beef Reuben

Rich and delicious, some slices of corned beef were thicker than others.  All of those corned beef slices were tender, but, the varying thickness of the slices added a nice chew to the sandwich.

The Matzoh Ball Soup

Finely chopped herbs grace the top and a fine dice of carrots, onions and celery greet you under the rich broth.  And, the matzoh ball was as light as air.  This was our sanctuary on a cold and rainy day.

Batdorf & Bronson — The General Muir Blend

We have to save something for next time.  But, we couldn’t leave without a few bagels.  They were practically calling our name.

We’ll have more to share on those later this week.

Maui Mokka @ Starbucks

Maui Mokka — Starbucks Reserve

We’ve been lounging for almost 4 happy years in the Dancing Goats camp (Batdorf & Bronson, Dancing Goats, more & more still).  But, a serendipitous fluke had us wandering randomly into the Decatur Square Starbucks.  We stumbled upon a display of Starbucks reserve coffees and greedily grabbed a bag of the Maui Mokka.  Needless to say, one lovely taste later we were looking for more.  It’s already sold out online.  But, if you’re lucky enough to find a stray bag, you won’t regret buying it.  It’s very accurately described as a touch spicy, rich mocha flavor, full-bodied and silky smooth.

We might have to wander in there more often and give a few more of those reserve coffees a try.  But, we still love you best Dancing Goats (Batdorf & Bronson)!

Be Better Than The Gap

A Valentine’s Day Bargain

I can’t think of a single solitary thing more depressing than eating chain restaurant food on Valentine’s Day.  Just don’t do it.  There are a thousand and one better things you could do.  But, no matter what you do, for God’s sake… BE BETTER THAN THE GAP!

So, have you seen the movie Crazy, Stupid, Love?  No?  There’s idea number one for you.  It’s this sweet, funny little love story that tracks three generations… three stories of love and everyday life.  Idea number 2?  Do something you’ve never done before.  Hike up a mountain and watch the sun rise.  Or, surprise that special someone by taking the day off.  And, spend the day together.  Or, go get ice cream for breakfast and spend the rest of the day in bed.  Whatever you do, do something fun.  Do something different.  Make memories.  Do something that has secret meaning for the one you love… something THEY want… something they will never forget… something they will look back on with joy… something to bring a smile to their face and touch their heart for all time.  Show them that you know what makes them happy.  The knowledge that you know what makes them feel loved… that’s something they’ll remember.

But, whatever you do…  Be better than the Gap!

It truly is the most important thing.

A Gorgeous Start

Add butter and cheese, if you choose.

Kashk Badenjan

Gorgeous olive oil, tender eggplant and a touch of herby mint bring this dish to life.  It’s the sort of dish that we want to eat every day of our life.  So, yes, you could say that it’s good.

Mizra Ghasemi or Koo Koo Sabzi, next time?  Definitely

Crocus Sa-Tea-vus (And, a Bell’s)

House infused vodka, bergamont and lemon, this lovely golden cocktail balanced the refreshing lemon and bergamot tea with the richness of saffron and a tiny touch of honey for sweetness.  Not too sweet at all, the sweetness simply highlighted the other flavors without overwhelming them.

Bread is Art
(Or, it could art be if it were in focus.)

Soltani Kabab

This combination is one Barg Kabab (marinated filet mignon) and one Koobideh Kabab (seasoned ground beef).  Both were tender and delicious.  And, that charred tomato was equally delicious.

Lamb Kabob Flatbread Sandwich

This will be another addition to the “I want to eat this every day.” list.  Each little cube of lamb was tender, juicy and touched with a gorgeous pink to prove that  you can sear the exterior of a tiny piece of meat and keep the interior moist and tender.  Persian pickles, diced tomatoes, onions, fresh herbs and a touch of yogurt add fresh, bright flavors to this meat filled flatbread.

Big Tex Decatur

Migas Topped With Carnitas & Jalapeño Relish

Breakfast heaven, tender chunks of pork with crispy edges bury those perfectly cooked eggs.  Sometimes, we can be a bit generous with that word.  But, this time, we’d offer even higher praise.  Those eggs were light, supremely delicate and touched with that hint of creamy, custardy interior that make a perfect plate of scrambled eggs.  The tortillas only added to our pleasure.  Crispy around the edges and tender in the middle, we couldn’t have asked for more.  We were tempted to order more.  But, our full bellies forced us to resist the insanity of that urge.  This is the first serious contender for favorite breakfasts of 2013.

Patty Melt, Big Tex Cantina Style

You might not be able to tell.  But, that was a HUGE (and thick) burger.  Pair that with two slices of fat, fluffy Texas toast and two slices of cheese, this was a hungry-man-sized burger.

Now, pair that burger with their insanely rich roasted creamed corn.  And, you won’t need to eat for the rest of the day.  That’s for sure.

Texas Margarita

The lush smell of citrus was in the air as we watched the bartender squeeze a pitcher of lime juice… or was it lemon juice.  Two dreamy margaritas later, it was hard to be sure.  We left happy and thoroughly sated.  The memory of citrus vividly wafting through in our minds.

Cakes & Ale Bakery

Almond Croissant

There are no words to adequately describe the goodness.

The outer layers are delightfully light, flaky, airy and crisp in a perfectly fragile and delicate way.  The interior is buttery, dense and so deliciously rich with sweet, almond paste.  It’s literally dripping in slivered almonds and more almond paste is baked on top to add another dimension of roasty, toasted nut flavor .  This beauty is unique, incredible, and crazy-rich.  We hope it never changes… not one single bit.  It’s worth every last calorie and more.

Yebo Restaurant & Bar

Bunny Chow

That sounds so much nicer than chicken liver curry with peri-peri in a South African bread bowl.  Or, then again, does it?  No matter.  It doesn’t really matter what you call it.  We want to eat it.  This was a mildly spiced, rich and creamy curry with little nuggets of tender (cooked to near perfection) chicken livers topped with beautifully delicate purple micro greens.

A peek at the menu…

..or two

Fried Chicken with Per-peri & Collard Greens

Soul food with a little African spice, we loved every crisp, yet tender bite.

Spicy Pork Pastries

Also filed under bunny chow, these were featherly light on the outside.   So flaky, those flakes melted away like a whisper on your tongue.  Leaving you with rich, lightly spiced porky good bits on the inside, these were incredibly filling.  We could have considered them a meal if we weren’t being such gluttons.

No, this wasn’t dinner.

It’s a dimly lit lunch.

Sometimes, it’s fun to take a break from the stresses of the day and hide in the dark confines of a quiet, relaxing restaurant and take a little mid-day mental vacation.

Yebo?  Yes, more please!  We want more… much more.
