Santa’s Private Reserve Ale — Rogue Ales

What are you putting out for Santa tonight?

We’re enjoying Santa’s Private Reserve Red Ale.  This double hopped red has plenty of toasty malt.  It’s rich with a deep bitter caramel flavor.  And, finishes with a spicy bite from the evergreen.  That hoppy spruce finish makes your tongue tingle with the flavor of the season.

Merry Christmas!!

Root Beer

Great Retro Logo

But, the root beer reminded us more of an old fashioned cola.

Bulldog

Now, this is a very nice root beer.  Rich, complex flavor with a nice touch of vanilla, we’ll be trying this again soon.

Speculoos Cookie Butter + Pretzels = Perfect Salty, Sweet Treat For Snack Time

To ease the guilt, add a perfectly ripe sliced pear or apple.

Trader Joe’s

Egg Harbor Cafe

Corned Beef Hash Benedict

Both eggs were over-cooked and a bit rubbery.

Barrington Benedict

More of the same, those eggs were over-cooked eggs.  The bland Hollandaise was runny, watery, and all-around unpleasant.  And, what about those potatoes?  They were “fine”.  But, they were barely browned and barely warm.  This might be a step up from IHOP.  But, we’ll need to try some more of their offerings to make that claim for sure.

We’d hope for as much thought going into the quality of the food as the cutesy country decor.

Taqueria Los Hermanos

Enchiladas De Mole

Each enchilada was stuffed with grilled chicken breast slices marinated in lime.  Then, they were topped with two types of cheese and mole sauce.  Fresh green beens sautéed with garlic and olive oil, pico de gallo and red rice completed the plate.

Res Ahumado

Giant chunks of tender brisket are smothered with chipotle-guajillo pepper sauce.  This (seriously) gargantuan platter offers sautéed spinach, pan-fried potatoes and a generous mound of pico de gallo.

Chunky Guacamole

Chips & Salsa

Start to finish, this was a meal we’d be more than happy to eat any day of the week.  But, we’ll definitely be skipping the sangria next time.

Canton House

We’re (mostly) refraining from comment until our next visit.  Over half of our plates were cold.  No, we do not mean lukewarm or room temperature.  No, we mean very cold.  The sort of cold that reminds you of food that has come straight out of the fridge or food that has been left by an open door on a 30 degree day.

The one comment that we must make refers to the shrimp and chive dumpling (above).  That wrapper was unpleasantly thick, undercooked, paste-y, and cold.

These coconut tarts were the one highlight of the meal.  They were fresh from the oven.  The paper thin flakes of pastry melted away beautifully with each bite.  And, the warm coconut filling was divine and buttery rich (in the best possible way).

Hopefully, we’ll have better luck next time.

Thai Basil Curry Terra Chips

Thai Basil Curry Terra Chips

It might be more straightforward to say a full serving of ROOT vegetables in every ounce.  Our bag only had a couple Kabocha chips.  But, those were a couple of mighty tasty curried chips.

In any event, they were too good.  We made a meal out of this bag.  They were all super crisp and the assortment of fried chips added a great variety of flavor to the curry seasoning blend.

Abita Pecan Harvest Ale

BBQ Chicken Half with White BBQ Sauce, Mac & Cheese And Cornbread

After too many years to count of consistently gorgeous spice-rubbed chicken with tender, moist and delicious smoky meat, it safe to say that Fox Bros BBQ is dishing up a perfect barbecued chicken.  And, that spicy jalapeno cornbread is so delightfully crave-worthy.

Burnt Ends in Barbecue Sauce

So rich, smoky and delicious, it’s a great occasional indulgence.  Sandwich or platter, you choose.  But, if you choose platter, you must be hungry or be prepare to have leftovers.

Collards & Cornbread

Both touched with lovely spice, this hearty combination makes a perfect small meal in its own right.

One Eared Stag

“Hot” Chicken

Two orders, both divinely hot and spicy.  We’ve tasted both Prince’s and 400 Degrees.  This was more reminiscent of 400 degrees with a hotter, slightly bitter hot pepper heat.  But, we would have licked our plates clean if we were animals.  So, yeah, this was pretty delicious “hot” chicken.  And, the slightly sweet and spice-y pickled tomato was a nice little cherry on top of this prize.

The exterior stays gorgeously crisp under that deep red layer of hot sauce.  And, the interior was tender, moist and rich with flavor.  That tasty chicken wasn’t buried under the hot pepper heat.  It merely complemented it.

Virginia Lump Crab Roll

This was seriously delicious.  We could eat this for lunch every day of our lives.

So good.

So jam-packed with sweet, tender nibbles of crab, we want more.

A Mountain of Onion Rings

$3, seriously?  Now, that’s just dangerous.  This mountain of onion rings shrunk the exact instant that it hit the table.

…Jump Forward 5 Minutes

“Why can’t I make a meal out of these?  They’re a vegetable, right?”

The Martinez

Hayman’s gin, Cocchi di Torino, Leopold Maraschino & Boker’s Bitter, what’s another splurge after a lunch full of indulgences?

Some wine, maybe?

This was a great way to spend a quiet, lazy day.

The Optimist

Oysters, West Coast

Sweet and bursting with an incredible depth of flavor, we loved them.  These oysters are meant to be eaten as they are.  They’re just too good to be hidden under a mignonette or grated horeseradish.  Add a drop or two of lemon, if you must.

Oysters, East Coast

Lovely and delicate, these were quite mild by comparison.

Mother of Pearl

Death’s Door gin, Fever Tree tonic, Fee Brothers celery bitters, garnished with a celery leaf and powdered celery salt dust the rim, this was a divine way to wash down those oysters.

Realease The Kraken

Take one Dark & Stormy.  Then, add a touch of sweetness & spice.  Someone was a bit light-headed after one.  And, that just never happens.  So, there was a good dose of liquor hiding in those depths.  Oh yeah, we’ll definitely be back for more cocktails.

The Lobster Roll

It’s  a thing of beauty.

Oh, So Very Good

Each and every mouth-filling morsel of lobster was supremely tender and rich with flavor.

The Lobster Cobb

Dressed with a lovely Dijon vinaigrette, those lusciously tender bites of lobster take on an almost buttery quality.  The sharp bite of Dijon mustard underlines the sweetness of the lobster.  This was one divine salad that was utterly packed with quality ingredients.

We didn’t forget about those buttery, wheat crackers that broke into crisp shards.  We nibbled up almost every bite.

Next time… decisions, decisions.
