Bossum Jungsik

Tender slices of steamed pork with two types of pickled daikon, seafood pancake slivers in sweet red pepper sauce and steamed cabbage leaf wraps

From Rich to Spicy to Sharp & Tangy to Sweet Savory…

This was a gorgeous example of a balance of flavors.

Daeji Bulgogi

Spicy pork Korean barbecue topped with toasted sesame seeds and scallion slivers, this was a rich and delicious mountain of pork.  The spice level could range from fairly mild (our take on it) to moderate depending on your taste.

Southern Cornbread

Crispy, golden brown edges and plenty of corn meal, this is really great example of Southern style cornbread.  Our basket was warm and moist.  That barely-there touch of moisture is a sure sign that this was one fresh batch of cornbread.

Fried Chicken

Crisp and lightly breaded on the outside, both pieces were shockingly moist and tender.  Minimal spices allow the flavor of the chicken to shine through.

Sweet Potato Casserole & Brunswick Stew

Both were tasty sides.  The sweet potato casserole with its marshmallows and raisins was more than sweet enough to be a dessert.  We mean that in a good way.

Ultra crispy on the outside, tender on the inside

We both enjoyed the light touch used in breading this tasty breast.  Every bite was one part delicate crunch and one part tender chicken.

Chicken Fried Steak With Brown Gravy, Potato Salad And Mac & Cheese

Nibbles were stolen from the red-skinned potato salad first.  Tender red-sksinned potatoes make a lovely potato salad.  The chicken fried steak was fine.  It was a bit salty (especially that puddle of brown gravy).  But, there was a certain nostalgia and charm which stems from the fact that we might have enjoyed this in a high school cafeteria.  Even with its flaws, we’d still say that it’s better than most cafeterias and diners serve.

Favorite meal at JR’s?  It’s still breakfast.  Those fluffy cat head biscuits are calling our name again.  We’ll be back.  Real Soon.

Mae’s Bakery

Oatmeal Chunk Cookie & Banana Chunk Muffin

That cookie was chock full of chocolate chunks.

But…

These banana crumble muffins with giant chocolate chunks were just too good.  So good, we fought over every bite.  And, we were compelled to return for a second muffin on the VERY SAME DAY!

Yes, this is the second muffin.

Sopes Suadero

Tender brisket is shredded with edges crisped up on the grill.  Rich, beefy, and generously topped with sour cream and crumbled cheese, this was one of the highlights of the meal.

Too good.

Huaraches Al Pastor

From the dense fried masa base to the mountain of pork and toppings, this could be a meal on its own.  It’s nothing short of gigantic.

Chicken Mole Tamale Wrapped in a Banana Leaf

The banana leaf adds a lovely herbal quality that almost hints at smoky.  And, this fabulous tamale was jam-packed with tender chicken.  It would be a serious understatement to describe the filling as generous.

And, divine.

Heirloom Market BBQ

Spicy Korean Style Pork Sandwich

This sandwich was the highlight of the meal.  The pork was tender and full of flavor.  And, the sauce had a nice amount of spice and just a touch of sweetness.

More, please.

Pickles, Fries and Mac & Cheese

The fries were super crisp and addictive.  The mac & cheese was rich, creamy and a just a tiny touch spicy with red pepper flakes.  But, those sweet and spicy pickles were the most memorable accompaniment.  They were a bit like a Korean version of a bread and butter pickle.  There weren’t many on the plate, but, they were another high point to the meal.

Spice Rubbed Ribs & Pulled Pork

Both were tender, moist and smoky.

Between the two, we both preferred the richly spiced ribs over the pulled pork.  But, we didn’t fight over either one the way we fought over that delicious mound of Korean pork.

That was a generous mound of greens.  But, we didn’t enjoy them.  They were a bit too soft, the flavor wasn’t quite right and the aluminum cup (metallic flavor mind games… real or imagined, we’re not sure) was a bit of a turnoff.

Triple Chocolate Cookie @ Heirloom Market BBQ

Triple Chocolate Chunk Cookie

One bite into this chocolate-y cookie we regretted buying only one.  So rich and brownie-like, that cookie was seriously littered with white, milk and dark chocolate.  We’re eager to try the other varieties, too.  The giant snicker doodle will be ours soon.  It’s on our must-try list for next time.

Barely sweet cookies filled with caramel and dipped in coconut, these make a lovely companion to your morning cappuccino.

Glazed Cinnamon Bun & Pan Dulce

For around $1 each, these monstrosities will seriously fill you up.  We’d never call these our favorite pastries.  But, they’ll do in a pinch when you’re craving a sweet breakfast treat.

Popcorn Haven

Hot Cheddar & Hot Wings With Blue Cheese

There was a good amount of heat to the Hot Cheddar. But, the hot wings flavor was quite mild and very tame.

Dark Chocolate Popcorn With Pretzels

At just under $6 per bag, the bag of Dark Chocolate popcorn looked to be about 2 heaping cups worth of chocolate-y snacks and the Hot Cheddar was closer to 5 or 6 cup.  While both were tasty, they were also excessively greasy.  We weren’t crazy about the unpleasant waxy/greasy coating that clung to our tongues after as little as a handful of popcorn.

We might be tempted to return to try the candy or caramel popcorn at some point.  But, we’re really in no hurry to try them.  We were both left with an overwhelming feeling of “eh”.
