Tabouli Salad With Orzo & Shrimp

Yes, it was tasty.  But, was it $11 dollars worth of tasty?  That’s the real question.

Grilled Chicken with Vegetables & White Beans

This was a perfectly “fine” meal.

The Rusty Nail

The Cajun Burger

As always, this was a tasty burger with loads of sautéed onions and cajun spice.  Those cheesy jalapeño grits in the background had plenty of great flavor, too.

Pulled Pork Salad With House Dressing

Piled high with tender pork, this is one incredibly hearty salad.

Fried Mushrooms

Don’t they just scream “Eat me”?  …In a word, yum.  The accompanying horseradish sauce has just the right kick of fresh heat to make these really interesting.

Those shredded bits and slices of roast pork were still warm from the oven.

Cuban Sandwich

Mmm, tender roast pork…

This sandwich alone warrants a return visit.  Yeah, we’ll be back.

Soon.

Arepa Topped with Ropa Vieja & Cheese

Tostones Latin Cafe has been open four days.  Is it too soon to say this is the best ropa vieja we’ve ever had the good fortune to taste outside of Miami?  Probably, but, it’s still true.

Shrimp Torta

The shrimp were so tender we’re willing to overlook the excessive usage of mayo.

Jalapeño Cornbread

Seriously doused with butter and honey, this is the sweet side of cornbread.  The jalapeño added a tiny burst of heat.  But, honey and butter were the dominant flavors.

Watermelon Mojito & Ginger Peach Sangria

Each drink arrived festively adorned with cocktail umbrellas.

Chef’s Choice Oysters — BBQ Style, Grilled with Bacon

So good, these disappeared at light speed.

Cornmeal Fried Oysters with Herb Salad & Black Eyed Peas

Crispy golden brown cornmeal exteriors yielded to perfectly cooked oysters, the herb salad was the right touch of freshness to accompany the rich oysters and savory bites of stewed black eyed peas.  We could have easily made a meal of these.

Cornmeal Fried Catfish on Black Eyed Peas & Wilted Greens
topped with Herb Salad

This was another example of a perfectly fried golden brown cornmeal shell.  This time it covered a moist and flaky catfish fillet.  Hidden under that generous catfish flllet were lemony wilted greens that paired beautifully with those hearty black eyed peas.  More, please.

The Chicken

This meal is all about the chicken.  Marinated in a mildly spicy sauce and flame grilled, we’d happily eat this chicken again any day of the week.  The sides (pictured above and warm corn tortillas, too) are a bit of an afterthought.  But, for just over $15 how can you complain?  This is a good meal of mostly fresh (those baked beans were definitely straight out of a can) food.

On the very quiet night of our visit, the grills were stuffed from end to end with grilling chicken halves that are later hacked into pieces.  Are they saving these to serve for lunch tomorrow?  We’re not sure.  We do know our chicken was served piping hot and fresh off the grill.

We’ll eagerly make a return visit to test that theory.

Chat Patti

Patra Plate

Coated in a chickpea batter, patra leaves are rolled, steamed and sliced.   Then, they’re topped with cilantro and shredded coconut.  Served with a green chutney, this could easily become a new favorite dish of ours.

Samosa Chat

Chat Patti  has been making our favorite samosa chat for too many years to count.  And, it’s still the best.  A crispy samosa is topped with chickpea curry (chole), cilantro chutney, chili sauce, yogurt and blend of spices. It’s meant to be a snack.  But, it’s hearty enough to be a meal.

Taken To-Go, this definitely beats fast food by a mile.  But, it’s still not a favorite of ours.  Too much sauce always seems to be paired with slightly dry and over-cooked ribs.
