Curly’s Fried Chicken

Curly’s Fried Chicken — Breast & Hot Sauce

Wing & Slaw

Both pieces of chicken were breaded with a light hand.  This lends a more delicate exterior with a crispy, crumbly & flaky crust.

White Fish Sandwich

Really good.

Fried Shrimp

Crispy & tender, but quite salty.

With Small Side of Fried Okra

Fried okra, what’s not to love?

And a Large Order of Mac & Cheese

Tasty, but, it was a bit ordinary.  We barely remembered it afterward.

We enjoyed our meal.  However, the salt content in the breading varied significantly.  With the chicken perfectly salted and the shrimp rather significantly over-salted, we’d have to say that was a bit of a negative.  Hopefully, that was a fluke.

Irish Coffee?

Yes, please.

Salmon Cakes Benedict

Choices…

…Choices

This was a great choice.

Yes, this was a very good choice.  Gorgeous, bright orange and custardy egg yolks were perfectly cooked.  Tender salmon cakes, lemon hollandaise, and brightly acidic capers were the perfect companion to those rich, creamy yolks.

The heartier appetite went for the Westside Pileup.

The Westside Pileup

Pileup describes this mountain of food to a tee.  A base of potatoes generously dotted with diced red and green peppers were hidden under a couple eggs, plenty of bacon and a mess of shredded cheddar.  For some, this mountain of food could also be called The Day Killer.  You just have to fight that urge.

Fried Green Tomato BLT?  That guarantees a return visit.

Crunchie

Have you ever had a Crunchie bar?

It would be an insult to call the flavor a bit like a “Whopper”.  It’s kinda sorta close… just imagine the Crunchie so much better in every way.  You know what happens when you bite into a Whopper?  The waxy chocolate is followed by rigidly hard malty filling that grates and scrapes at your teeth in the most unsettling fashion.  Forget that.  Seriously, try a Crunchie.  The cadbury chocolate of the Cruchie is smooth and creamy, the way the malty fluff shatters into a million delicate little crumbs in your mouth on the first bite, and the way it just dissolves away like a sweet dream on your tongue.  The Crunchie wins in every way.

Yes, it’s super sweet, but, it’s also oh-so-good.

Sailor’s Shanty

White Wine Sangria

…and fried calamari with wasabi aioli

Tender calamari in a pleasantly crisp shell, the fresh cilantro added the right dose of freshness.

The Menu

Smoked Chicken with Melon Salad & Mac ‘N Cheese

Hidden under that beautifully smoked chicken thigh and leg was a very generous mound of pulled chicken breast.  We enjoyed both.   And, the melon salad with three types of melon was a perfect way to finish the meal.

The Graft Burger

With caramelized onions, shoe string onions, smoked mayo, and balsamic marinated bits, this burger had a nice blend of flavors to accentuate the rich beef.

You  can literally see the layers of flavor.

Another round of drinks to finish the meal.

And, a dessert…

…or two to end the meal.

We’ll back some time soon to try the wine and food pairings.

Bone Lick BBQ

Pulled Pork, Sausage & Garlic Toast

So tender and smoky, this was a great first bite.

Pork, Chicken & Brisket

Yes, it all tastes just as good as it looks… maybe better.

The Brisket

Ditto.

Ribs & Sausage

The ribs had a lovely rub.  And, they were just as moist, tender and smoky as all the rest.  The one down side?  The sausage was a bit overcooked.  But, given the near perfection of everything else, this was an incredible first meal.

North Carolina, Pepper & Vinegar, South Carolina, & KC Style

All sauce types are represented here.  And, they’re all good.  Our favorites were the North Carolina and the Kansas City Style with the South Carolina a very close second.

We would have loved to make a meal out of that mac & cheese.  It was so rich and creamy.  The fresh jalapeño slices added a perfect bit of spicy freshness.

All gone.

1/2 Rack Ribs

Tender, moist, smoky, and nicely coated in a pleasantly mild spice rub, we both loved these.

Tender, Moist & Smoky On The Inside

We enjoyed the spice rub with its touch of sweetness.  It complemented rather than overpowered the tender, smoky meat.

The Hot BBQ Sauce Is The Way To Go

We both loved the Hot BBQ sauce with its little burst of hot sauce and a light touch of vinegar.

Batdorf & Bronson

Batdorf & Bronson’s Nicaragua Isabelia

The description says it all “Balanced & sweet with black cherry, cocoa, and cinnamon”.  Deep, dark (but, not too dark), rich, and complex, we’re both loving it.  And, the roast date was within 2 days of our purchase.  That’s another reason to love Batdorf and Bronson.  We’re wishing we’d bought a second bag.  This one is too close to gone.

Love it.

Farm Burger With Fried Egg

So good…

At first glance, you might think this burger was overcooked.

It only took one bite to erase that fear.  This burger was full of rich beef flavor.  It was tender, juicy and close to a perfect medium.  (That’s no small task for a smaller, but generous slider-sized burger.)  The fried egg had a gorgeous bright orange, custardy center.  And, the bun was pure heaven.

We’ll be more than happy to devour another on any future Saturday.
