The fried chicken breast on our sandwich was gigantic.  The exterior was super crisp on the outside.  And, the chicken on the inside was moist, tender and offered good flavor.

Also properly cooked, these skinless breast pieces were crispy golden on the outside with a moist, tender center.

Mofongo With Garlic Shrimp

Perfection, again!

Consistently dishing up the best mofongo, we were so much more than pleased.

AGAIN.

Super plump, these shrimp in creamy, garlic laced sauce were divine.

Simply put, this shot speaks for itself.  You can see the crispy pork and the perfectly golden edges of those plantains… even mashed.

Dominican Stewed Beef

Tender, richly flavored and all-around delicious, this is a new favorite.

Served with boiled Yuca, Pickled Red Onions, & White Rice

As ex-South Floridians, we know our way around a bowl full of beans.  We’re huge fans of all things Cuban.  And, black beans are high on that list.  But, this bowl full of Dominican beans deserve a special mention.  They were rich with complex flavors and beautifully balanced.  The spices were present, but, not overpowering.  We would have been happy to make a meal out of them.

That’s chitterlings, blood sausage, sweet breads, skirt steak, flank steak, sausage and grilled chicken breast.

Half Of The Platter For 1

Even cut in half, this is a seriously large platter of assorted meats.

AND…

This mountain of food comes with a side item of your choice.  We chose two pan-fried eggs.  Why not?  Can you think of a better way to top off this protein extravaganza?  Those yummy little fried garlic tidbits were leftover from the platter of garlic fries (below).  The morcilla was a favorite for both of us.  It was perfectly cooked.  Crispy on the outside with a creamy, custardy center, we’d make another trip to Sabores del Plata just for another taste of this blood sausage. It was that good.

Those crispy garlic bits were divine.  We’d both be happy to live on these.

Very generously stuffed with cheese and ham, this could almost be a meal.

Revolution Doughnuts

Blueberry Glazed Yeast Doughnut

Blueberry blended with hibiscus give this glaze its incredible depth of flavor and vibrant color.

Doughnut perfection?  These just might be it.

Salted Caramel Glazed With Bacon

Before such a claim could be made, there are more doughnuts to try.  The deep, dark chocolate glazed doughnuts are laced with Belgian chocolate and vanilla.  (Homemade vanilla? Maybe, there’s something interesting lurking in the rich, complexity of this chocolate.)  There’s nothing ordinary about these doughnuts.  Where most chocolate glazes taste only of sugar, this is a chocolate ganache that’s all about the chocolate.  That’s the way it should be.

What about the salted caramel?  With or without bacon, a touch of salt keeps this bittersweet caramel alternative in the running, too.

And, last but certainly not least, there’s the blueberry filled.   Mmm… Deep dark purple blueberry… is it jam?  No, these doughnuts are stuffed with something closer to blueberry pie filling than jam.  This is a very good thing.  These are another winner.

All of these flavors are rich enough to compete with the delightfully dense, yeast doughnuts that are a Revolution doughnut.  These doughnuts are more of a pastry, really.  That’s one more reason to fall in love with these doughnut creations.

Chocolate Mousse Cake

Looks great!  Tastes… not so great.  For such a deep dark chocolate colored cake, it has remarkably little flavor.  And, the mousse has a cloyingly, thick texture.  Chocolate that refuses to melt in your mouth is extremely unpleasant.

Both chocolate and cream are nearly tasteless and very heavy… oily, greasy heavy.

Never again.

From now on, we’ll stick to the $1 soft serve yogurt cones.  At least they’re edible.

Simply put, this little gem of a place has all the beer you want to drink.  And, while you’re there, you’re sure to find something new to try.  This time we went with a couple Oud Beersel Kriek & Framboise (both under $10 a bottle).

Nut Balls With Buttery Caramel

Ok, this is just a guess.  But, we think these are labeled incorrectly.  There wasn’t a single piece of dried fruit.  These are all about the nuts.  A blend of pistachios, cashews, and almonds made up these nutty clusters.  Dried Fruit?  Who needs dried fruit?  These are little balls of awesome.

Chandrakala

Ground cardamom and nuts fill these pastries dripping with brown sugar syrup.  These were dangerously good, as usual.

Kaju Gujiya

These are a new favorite.  Gilded with silver, these tender, buttery pastries are filled with a sweet paste of dried fig and other assorted dried fruits.  So rich, one little crescent makes an incredibly satisfying two bite dessert that pairs perfectly with masala tea or coffee.

The Veggie Loaf

Pecan romesco sauce hides under a mountain of roasted cauliflower, shitake mushrooms, and sun-dried tomatoes.  These vegetables were topped with a wedge of Leon’s veggie loaf and a handful of arugula.  We still consider this to be one of our favorite vegetarian dishes.

Cherry and other slightly sour, tart fruit in the background become more complex and interesting with the oak.

Summer Cocktails

Grass-fed Beef Burger, Cheddar Casserole & Lightly Dressed Arugula

Our grass-fed beef burger generously topped with cheddar was quite nice.  But, much of the flavor was lost under way too much ketchup and mustard.  Next time, we’ll ask for our condiments on the side.

This humble little cheddar casserole sitting on top of a ladle full of spicy apple butter was our favorite part of the meal.  A slightly larger portion of the casserole with the dressed arugula on the side would make an incredible meal all on its own.

A Side Of Fries With Goat Cheese Fondue, & Garlic Aioli

We weren’t prepared to consume a mountain of fries.  So, we went with this side of fries.  It was an incredibly generous portion.  And, it’s more than enough for two to share with dinner or even to start.
