El Taco Veloz

Barbacoa Burrito

One big flour tortilla is stuffed with tender bits of rich, meaty shredded beef, minced onions and cilantro.  There was a nice balance of meat to tortilla.

(And, this will be our go-to… to go.)

Tacos

Barbacoa up front, chile relleno in back

Barbacoa Taco

Generously stuffed with richly flavored, tender shredded meat?

Hell, yeah.

Chile Relleno

Mere minutes later, we were home and eating.  Everything was a bit too soft from the drive.  The chile relleno suffered the most.  It was quite soggy.  Even so, everything was incredibly tasty.  What’s not to love about a drive-thru that’s open til midnight every day of the week?  And, 4 am on Fridays and Saturdays?  That’s a serious win.

Jim N Nick’s BBQ

Old-Fashioned Soda Shop Crushed Ice

Honestly, it was one of our favorite parts of the meal.

Mini Muffins

Light & Fluffy Baby Muffins

…2nd favorite

And, then, it all goes downhill.

Pulled Pork

Collard Greens & Baked Apples

Spicy Smoked Sausage

Chicken, Collards, & Succotash

The succotash was tasty.  And, the collards were nice.  The greens maintained their firm texture and chunks of meat were littered among them.  But, the chicken was dry on the inside and soggy on the outside.   In other words, the texture that meat takes on after it’s been sitting in a warming tray for hours.  It wasn’t pretty… or tasty.

We did like the Habanero BBQ Sauce.  It’s moderately spicy, but, quite good.

Hu Tieu Saigon

If you have a cold, this really hits the spot.

The saltiness might be a bit much at other times.  But, that’s exactly what we crave when we’re a bit under the weather.

Green Curry

We’ll need to try this again.  Next time, without muted taste buds.

And, sweet, sugary banana bubble tea for a burst of energy.

Kombucha (Synergy Enlightened Trilogy)

GT’s Kombucha Synergy Trilogy

95 % Kombucha + 5 % fruit juice

This version of kombucha was much more enjoyable than the last one we tried.  We still notice the yeasty vinegary in-your-face and up your nose zing.  But, raspberry and lemon juice make this much more drinkable.  The fruity flavor adds a pleasant lightness to that zing.  The lemon clearly dominates while the raspberry takes on a fruity background note.

We’d definitely opt for this flavor over the zombie apocolypse multi-green sewer water flavor.

Bibimbap Burger @ Milano Bakery & Cafe

Milano Bakery & Cafe’s Bibimbap Burger

Toasted bun, fried egg, pickled vegetables, big beef patty and tangy hot sauce all work together to make this burger something better than all of those individual parts.

Bulgogi Burger

This burger is a bit more simple and one note.  The sweet and savory flavors you expect are present.  But, we both think this might be better without the cheese.  It’s a bit of a distraction.

Dry Blood Orange Soda

Hmm, unsettling mental imagery seems to spring to mind.

Tasty soda, regardless.

Gus Extra Dry Ginger Ale

Delicately sweetened with a nice burst of fresh ginger, we both loved this soda.

Bibimbob?

If you’re in the area, you might wanna call it lunch.

Taqueria San Pancho

Tacos al Pastor
(You may order a platter with foil wrapped tortillas or tacos a la carte.)

Richly spiced, but not spicy… this was the clear highlight of our visit.  Sadly, the tortillas that accompanied this platter were quite stale.  We do know how easy it is for this to happen.  Tortillas tend to dry out quickly when exposed to the air.  Not a big deal, but, it was a disappointment.

Torta al Pastor

This was fine.  But, the bread was extremely light, airy, and much too fluffy for our taste.  By the time we’d each taken a bite of our respective half, the sandwich had deflated into a soggy mess.  The taste of the bread had an unpleasant doughy flavor.  It was the same overpowering doughiness that you find in most simple mass-produced breads.

Dark Golden, Thick & Crispy Chips

These had a very hard, brittle crunch to them.  But, the extended time in the deep fryer gave them a deep, rich toasted corn flavor.

Pico de Gallo

Possibly bad timing on our part, but, this pico de gallo was the only item on the Salsa “Bar”.

So, we ordered guacamole and chips.  This came with a small container of mildly spiced tomatillo salsa.  The guacamole was utterly forgettable.  Actually, that’s a bit generous.  It was one of the worst we’ve ever tasted.  It was watery and completely lacked seasoning.  We doubt that even a speck of salt was added.

Taqueria San Pancho is a tiny postage stamp of a restaurant with about a dozen small and medium-sized tables.  The staff is helpful and friendly.  And, if we’re in the area again, we’d give them another chance.
