Boylan Bridge Brewpub

Beer Tasting

Boylan Bridge’s Bruno Bitter and Pullman Porter were two clear favorites.

Slivered Duck Reuben

It was fine.  Good fixin’s were buried under two utterly ordinary ho-hum slices of bread.

Wild Heaven Eschaton & Cream Soda

Wild Heaven Eschaton, a Belgian-style quadrupel ale (10.5%) aged on pinot noir chips is currently available in only a handful of restaurants in Atlanta and Athens.  We enjoyed the rich flavor that reminded us of a fine tawny port with hints of vanilla, oak and dried fruit.

And, what’s mimicking a third glass of water?  It’s a cream soda cocktail with Pinnacle whipped cream vodka and ginger ale that’s just too easy to drink for our own good.

Next time, La Poire

Duck Fat Fries with Bacon Mayo

AKA “The Day Killer”  …These crispy decadent fries should come with a warning.  We were both ready for a long winter’s nap after sharing this dish.  And, even sharing them, we both thought they were a meal on their own.

Sage Roasted Pork Tenderloin With Fingerling Hash

But, wait, there’s more.  This gorgeous pork chop is topped with gremolatta and served with two, tender easy-over eggs.

Someone’s stealing a crispy, garlic-y fingerling

Crispy on one edge,  tender and buttery on the other… we couldn’t stop eating them.

Shrimp & Grits

Those shrimp were tender, full of flavor, and perfectly cooked.  Yes, perfectly cooked.  That’s no exaggeration.  But, we both found the vinegary tang of the broth a bit overwhelming.

And, last but not least, the grits were rich, buttery, smooth and creamy.  If we weren’t stuffed to the gills, we would have gobbled up every bite.

Housemade Potato Chips With Onion Dip

Someone Can’t Wait

Why?  Because, each one of those chips is golden brown and delicious without being greasy.

Crispy Catfish Benedict

At first glance, the sight of that fat hunk of catfish was a very good sign.  The first bite proved our hunch to be correct.  Both of these golden chunks of catfish were crispy on the outside with a delicate, flaky white interior.  We didn’t appreciate the lettuce and tomato, though.

What do you think might happen to ripe tomato and delicate lettuce under a deep-fried fillet of catfish?

Yep, you guessed it.  It all got soggy and very wilted.  FAST.

Pork Belly Benedict

So tender, the shredded pork with sweet barbecue sauce nearly melted in our mouths.

So good.

And, just look at those deep dark golden brown potatoes.

Our First Meal

Fried Chicken Livers & Hot Sauce

It’s true.  These are losing a bit of their breading.  But, each tender little liver was touched with just the right dose of pink.  And, that wilted pile of greens might not look like much.  Fear not, these mustard greens are full of rich meaty flavor and strewn with bits of smoky pork.

Merguez With Cucumber, Mint, Yogurt & Currants

The casing was browned nicely.   Yet, the interior remained tender and succulent.  A chunky dice of red pepper adds more flavor and a touch of color.

Lobster Roll

Tender little bites… Norway Lobster (Langostine), maybe?

Soft Serve Vanilla Ice Cream With Charcoal Dust

The light dusting of sea salt brings this sweet vanilla to life.

Simple & Lovely.

La Pièce de Résistance… The Sammy

Two buttery cookies with big chunks of chocolate and crisp bacon are filled with sweet vanilla ice cream.  The intense contrast of that soft, sweet vanilla ice cream from those crisp, salty nibbles of bacon is a real winning combination.  But, the true genius is the soft, tender cookies.  They’re not frozen.  So, those delicate, buttery cookies crumble decadently into the ice cream.

These little darlings might only be $3 each.  But, they’re gonna getcha with the come-back.

They’re just begging to be eaten.

Chocolate Bacon Chunker Sammy With Chocolate Ice Cream

These are tasty, too.  But, the chocolate gets lost in the mix.  The vanilla’s the way to go.

Virgil’s Root Beer

Virgil’s Root Beer (And Stevia Sweetened Zero)

In search of the best root beer…

Virgil’s microbrewed root beer is a serious contender.  Seriously.  With a long list of  natural spices, including sweet birch, vanilla, anise, licorice, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, allspice, molasses, cassia oil, wintergreen and balsam oil, this incredible mix of spices dishes up rich, complex flavor.  Each and every one of those flavors put in a respectable appearance on your taste buds.  Those flavors unfold with each new sip.  Each lighting up your mouth with it’s own clear burst of specific characteristics.  It’s shockingly good.  It might turn out to be our favorite.  Without a doubt, it’s currently topping our short list.  Love it!!

And, the stevia sweetened Zero Root Beer has a simple, yet pleasing flavor.  The bitter stevia aftertaste buries the complexity found in the cane sugar version.  But, it’s perfectly “fine”.

We found our two 4 packs at Your Dekalb Farmer’s Market.

David’s Produce & Country Store

The smell of boiled peanuts simmering in a giant pot out front and this wooden door frame with vintage vegetable art tacked to it invite you in.  The building might be small in stature, but, it’s packed to the gills with jams, jellies, hot sauce, pickled veggies, fresh fruit, vegetables, a mountain of cakes, and quirky stuff.  Like this…

…and Pickled Quail Eggs with Garlic

Root Beer Taste Test — Boylan Bottleworks vs. Sprecher Brewery

We did have time for a mini taste test.

Boylan Bottleworks won! Boylan’s rich, complex flavor won us over.  And, we suspect the use of cane sugar eliminated the unpleasant aftertaste we noted with Sprecher’s.  But, Sprecher’s was mighty tasty, too.  Super sweet.  Sprecher’s had the flavor of root beer candy in a bottle.  It was just too sweet for both of us.

Sadly, we were unable to buy any of the fresh fruits, veggies or one of those tempting cakes.  (We weren’t headed home.)  But, we’ll be back.

Old South BBQ

The Ribs

They’re delicious, again.  We’re not at all surprise.  We’ve never had a bad rib at Old South.  Perfumed with smoky goodness, tender in the middle and crisp at the edges, this one big mountain of divine pork.  Just try to reach for one, I dare you.

The Chicken

On The Side:  Green Beans, Onion Rings & “Hot Sweet” Sauce

(…or is it “sweet hot”)

Whatever they call this one of their sauces, it’s good… really good.  Those green beens might be out of a can, but, who cares?  We just won’t get those next time.  The barbecued chicken easily erases those soggy greens from our memory.  This chicken has it all.  It’s super smoky, succulent, and tender.   Crispy skin with fire-singed edges, too?  That’s just icing on the cake.

Crispy Onion Rings

We love onion rings.  Lightly breaded and deep dark brown or these big super-crisp fatties?  We love them all.  And, these were hot, super crispy and the onion on the inside was sweet & tender.  It didn’t slide right out of the middle on the first bite, either.

Brunswick Stew

This thick, rich Brunswick stew with its shredded pork reminds us a bit of a thick Southern style sloppy joe.  It’s rich in tomato, pork and corn with a nice gentle kick of heat.  It’s a meal …and, a delicious one at that.  We learn to love it a little bit more with each new visit.

Since 1968? …you’ve gotta love that.  Don’t ya?

This old-fashioned charmer is a sentimental favorite of ours.  We just love that scrappy little house with the hand made wooden booths.  Barbecue fans have been breaking those booths in for us for 40+ years.

Salty Deep Fried Hominy Nibbles

Gaucho Skirt Steak Skewers with Peruvian Potato Salad

Paella with Calamari, Mussels, and Scallops (Special?)

Chili-Rubbed Prime Rib Special

We visited INC Street Food over 2 months ago.  Almost immediately, they slipped right out of our minds.  We do have four vivid memories:

1.  One person enjoyed the paella.  The other person questioned his sanity.

2.  The habanero au jus accompanying the prime rib (shown above) completely lacked heat.  We both found this to be incredibly odd.  Habaneros normally possess a vibrant, fiery heat.

3.  Also, that prime rib was excessively fatty and overcooked.  Eyeing those huge gobs of fat made the task of eating an unenjoyable chore.

4.  The skirt steak skewers were incredibly delicious and perfectly cooked.  So good, in fact, they might motivate a return visit.

…some day
