Sonic’s Chicago Dog Sport peppers, dill pickle wedge, tomato, relish, onion, mustard & celery salt on a poppy seed bun… Yep, all the usual suspects are present. The dog itself is the weak link. But, for a fast food dog? This is about as “acceptable” as fast food gets.

You can’t beat a store full of freshly stocked herbs and spices. From Aleppo to TienTsin, there’s a hot pepper here for you. Or, would you like something a bit more exotic like ajwain seeds, epazote, galangal, kala jeera, sumac or mahlab? Holiday season is right around the corner. That’s when the baker in the family slips into overdrive. That brings us to… What’s Our Favorite Section? The baking section wins. They offer 5 types of cinnamon. From Ceylon to the powerful Vietnamese Extra Fancy with it’s rich flavor and high oil content. Then, throw in Korintje, Tung Hing, and a Penzeys Blend that offers a balanced mix of each for good measure. There’s a selection of pure additive free extracts, too. Almond, lemon, orange, or vanilla? We’re giving the almond a try this time. And, we’ll be back for the whole Turkish Mahlab some time in the not too distant future when the family baker kicks into gear. They also stock dozens of spice blends, if you like that sort of thing. And, every season they add a fresh handful of quick & simple recipes to their website.

Ribs, Squash Casserole & Griddled Corn Bread The Ribs? Satisfactory… for a chain.
The squash casserole had a custardy, home-style pot luck dinner appeal. Sadly, it was a bit too salty. But, that could easily be a fluke. The griddled cornbread deserves a mention. We both enjoyed the warm, buttery toasted edges. It’s not the best cornbread in the world. Still, we finished both wedges before the barbecue. That says something. (Then again, maybe we were hungry.)

Really, there’s a little bit of sweet potato under those corn flakes & pecans.
See? There it is.
Banana Pudding Have you ever eaten something and contemplated the possible recipe? We’d guess: 1 part pudding and 2 parts cool whip surrounded by two ‘nilla wafers. The flavor of cool whip was overwhelming.
Oreo Pudding You know the smallest size condiment cups generally reserved for bbq sauce & mayo? Yes, that’s the size of these two “desserts”. These were $1.75 each. The same price as the vegetable side items. They’re easily less than 1/3rd the size of the vegetable cups. And, to add insult to injury, ours were half empty. …3 small bites? Maybe. Yes, we know. They’re only $1.75 each. But still… that’s just ridiculous. Moe’s Original BBQ

Two For The Road Check out Dutch Monkey Doughnuts Facebook for specials… Today, they’re offering a two for one special until 4pm if you know the secret code phrase. Just a light glaze and streaks of cinnamon here and there to complement the rich, yeasty goodness that is the Dutch Monkey doughnut. Wendy’s Sweet Potato Fries & A Double Burger Crispy Sweet Potato Fries at a fast food drive-thru? Win The Burger? Not that great, but, edible How long has it been since we’ve eaten at Wendy’s? Long enough to forget how big those square patties are. A double is way too much meat for one person. This combo meal is enough food for two to share.
Ribs, Collards & Brunswick Stew The picture says it all. Doesn’t it? These beauties are pink, tender, moist and delicious.
Pulled Pork, Brisket, Mac & Cheese and Potato Salad
For us, the ribs are king at Sam’s BBQ 1. But, that mac & cheese deserves more than a kind word or two. It’s a heaping mound of super rich, creamy hometown goodness encased in a shell of golden brown cheese. We might give the Brunswick stew, collards and mac & cheese a three way tie for best side. But, if someone had a gun to our head and made us choose, we’d have to give a win to the mac & cheese.
Loaded with pork, corn and peppery tomato broth, this Brunswick stew is no loser. It’s one of our favorites.
We Have One Complaint To Register What is this atrocity? Why would you torture us in this way? It’s cruel and very unusual punishment. Sam’s BBQ 1 Don’t forget though, they close really early! Mon-Thur: 11am-7:30pm

Peppery Potato Salad and An Ordinary Mac & Cheese
Brunswick Stew & Collard Greens The only complaint? Normally full of peppery bite, on this visit the Brunswick stew was abnormally sweet. We hope this is a fluke.

Chicken & Ribs
What’s better than ribs that are fall off the bone tender? It’s that touch of gentle resistance of the charred bark as you bite down to find tender, succulent meat beneath. Smoky & tender with a rub that has a touch of spice and sweetness, it doesn’t get better than this. Wait a minute. Actually, it does. There’s still that moist, tender chicken infused with smoky goodness to eat.
Jalapeno Cornbread & Collard Greens
Chicken, White BBQ Sauce, Fried Okra & Collard Greens Spice rubbed smoky skin reveals tender, juicy meat. More of those spicy collards, we just can’t get enough of them. Dotted with smoky meat, a meal at Fox Bros. wouldn’t be complete without a bowl of these delicious bitter greens.
Don’t forget the fried okra! Fresh okra is cut in half and dredged in a peppery cornmeal batter. Then, it’s fried to crispy golden brown perfection. Love it.

So Good. Four years & kickin’… We think they’re better than ever. Even with the crowd, every little piece of our meal contributed to the barbecue perfection that is Fox Bros BBQ.
