Dave Poe’s BBQ

Pulled Pork

The pulled pork was the highlight of our meal…. without a doubt.

This pork was full of flavor highlighted by a nice smoke.  The crusty bark held in the moisture and kept the meat nice and tender.

BBQ’D Ribs & Pulled Pork

The rest of the meal was a bit unfortunate.  The ribs were fine.  But, honestly, they weren’t really memorable…. particularly given their slightly dry and cold state.

Did we arrive at an off time?  We don’t think so.  It was lunchtime on a weekend.

Mac & Cheese

Smoked Chicken, Collards & Onion Rings

Both chicken and collards are more food for the fine category.  That’s the nicest thing we can say about this plate of food.  The onion rings were ice cold.  It’s obvious they’d been sitting around for quite some time.

Coming from inside the perimeter, this is a pretty long drive.  A really long drive for an okay meal?  We’d love to give them another chance.  But, we doubt it will be any time in the near future.

Bánh mì @ Lee’s Pho, Again

Banh Mi Thit Nuong

Two Bahn Mi sandwiches for around $6…  that’s a seriously good deal.

It all starts with some fresh, crispy crusty bread.  Then, these were stuffed with some nice pork, carrot, jalapeno, radish, cucumber, and cilantro.

Both sandwiches were quite good, again.  But…

Next time, we’d both like a bit more cilantro.

The Full Lineup of Steamers
(half are spicy dumplings, half not)

Korean Spicy Pork Mandu (Or, Mandoo)

Filled with spicy pork, translucent noodles, finely chopped onion and a touch of green, these handmade dumplings are delicious.  We are absolutely in love with these giant dumplings.

Spicy Chicken Mandu

The interior appears to be quite similar inside the spicy chicken version.  But, here, the fresh ginger really pops.  This adds a refreshing burst of bright, fresh flavor to the spice.  These are equally delicious… possibly even more delicious than the pork.  We argued this point amongst ourselves.

These yummy Korean dumplings are the one and only reason we will be returning to Mega Mart.  Period.

Hometown BBQ

Rib & Chicken Combo

Third times the charm right?  Apparently, that doesn’t apply to Hometown Barbecue and us.  Our hit & miss luck continued on this visit.  The ribs were a real hit.  They were tender, smoky, moist and full of rich pork flavor.  The chicken was another hit for the most part.  It might not be a winner in the looks category.  But, it had a nice smoke to it while maintaining a mostly-moist tenderness.

Brisket & Rib Combo

Sadly, the brisket was a perfectly dreadful miss.  So utterly dry, we had to pick it up with our fingers and gnaw at it like animals.  It was a bit like chewing on a hunk of smoked beef jerky.  We’re pretty sure it was a tasty jerky.  But, we can’t be sure.  Our taste buds were covered with crumbs of beef that can only be described as reminiscent of saw(beef)dust.

Thankfully, there was more than enough tender rib meat to make a sandwich for the unlucky soul who gambled on that brisket.  It’s just too bad that it had to be on a dreary un-toasted grocery store hamburger bun.

Brunswick Stew

The Brunswick stew was the only noteworthy side.  But, we can’t really say it’s a favorite.  There is an overwhelming sweet tomato soupy flavor.  That isn’t our cup of tea… at all.  The potato salad was a bit too heavy on the mayo.  And, the mac & cheese had the bright orange glow of a Kraft product.  But, we haven’t eaten Kraft mac & cheese since we were munchkins.  So, we can’t be sure.

Antico Pizza Napoletana, Another Visit

San Gennaro

Perfect crust, perfect sauce, perfect toppings…

Without a doubt, this is still the best pizza in town.  The San Gennaro is topped DOP San Marzano tomatoes, bufala mozzarella, sweet red peppers, sweet cipollini onions and sausage.  In our eyes, this is the very definition of the perfect pizza.

Those sweet red peppers are absolutely divine.

Fresh Watermelon Margarita

It was nice to see some Fox Bros BBQ favorites finding their way over to the new place.

Tangy Salsa & Toasty Chips

Fried Avocado Taco with Jalapeno Relish

Finely ground corn chips (Fritos) make a super crispy coating for the deep fried avocado.  All of the important yum factor elements are represented.  Crunchy, creamy, savory, salty, and a touch of barely there sweetness from the avocado…  what an unexpectedly perfect filling for a taco.  Then, you get a burst of fresh jalapeno bite and a little zing from the vinegar.  It’s all good.

Dr Pepper Chocolate Cake

Caramel Apple Cheesecake Pie

Such a lovely first meal on a gorgeous day…

We decided to take a couple desserts with us.  Both were packaged nicely with their appropriate toppings… strawberries, sauces and two types of whipped cream in separate containers.

In the privacy of our home, we took some liberties with those toppings.  We had some fun swapping out the cinnamon whipped cream intended for the caramel apple cheesecake.  Instead, we used it to top the Dr Pepper chocolate cake.  We both loved the way it added a Mexican hot chocolate vibe to the sweet chocolate cake.  Just like Coca Cola cake, this Dr Pepper cake emphasizes the sweet side of chocolate.  So, the touch of earthy bitterness from the cinnamon balanced it all out.

DBA Barbeque

Georgia Mule

DBA’s Georgia Mule is composed of Junior Johnson moonshine, fresh ginger, lime and ginger beer.  This cocktail is a lovely breath of fresh air on a warm night.

Fried Pickles & Bacon

Predominantly breaded with cornmeal, these had a really great crunch to them.  Though, like all fried pickles, you need to eat them fast, fast, fast!  They quickly turn soggy.

Fried Pickles & Bacon with Ranch Dressing

Served with a little cup of ranch, we decided neither fried pickles or bacon needed its embellishment.

The Tara Burger

We both loved this burger (even though it was slightly overcooked).  Topped with queso cheese sauce, crispy fried hash browns and fresh jalapeno slices, this burger was just begging to be devoured.  The spicy bite of fresh jalapeno slices with their rush of bright green flavor added the perfect burst of freshness to this incredibly rich (and filling) burger.

BBQ Ribs & Chicken
(The chicken is hidden under that mountain of gigantic onion rings)

Tender, smoky, and full of flavor, both ribs and chicken were delicious… as always.  What was our first comment to each other after one bite of those ribs?  “Why don’t we eat here more often?”

Then, we got a taste of their new spicy BBQ sauce… We loved it!  It’s a perfect rush of smoky heat with a great zippy bite of vinegar.  DBA Barbecue has our attention, again.

H&F Bottle Shop

Barolo Chinato
(Antica Ricetta di Giulio Cocchi)

This Barolo Chinato was an instant grab.  Instant Win.  Cocchi Barolo Chinato makes a lovely after-dinner digestif to sip… as well as a delicious addition to many cocktails.  The sharp (yet well-rounded) bite it adds can make a great cocktail even better.  Or, it can be sipped while eating a square of high quality chocolate.  This makes a simple, yet elegant dessert.

Bitter, touched with syrupy sweetness (in a good way), mellow old world spices with sweet cinnamon leading the way to other more delicately controlled spices in the background.  Rich & old-fashioned… in the best possible way.

Currently stocking a handful of bitters, mixers, aperitifs, digestifs & plenty of wine, we’ll be adding Holeman & Finch’s bottle shop to our list of must-stop shops for our wine and cocktail buying needs.  We can’t wait to see the addition of even more spirits to this lovely little shop.
