Sichuan Wontons with Red Oil

Sichuan Wontons with Red Oil

A generous bowl of wontons, vegetables, broth and a touch of red oil make this a hearty start to the meal.  The broth is spiced well.  But, all of the real heat is hidden in those innocent looking red chilies floating around.

Kimchi to nibble as we wait for the rest of our meal.

Salt & Pepper Shrimp

When in doubt, order Salt & Pepper Shrimp.  This dish almost guarantees success.  And, at Man Chun Hong, they were definitely a success.  They had a nice dose of salt, pepper, fried green onions and crispy garlic-y bits.  We enjoyed the touch of delicate sweetness that was noticeable with every bite.

Mapa Tofu (or, Mapo Doufu)

While we were hoping this dish would pack more red chili heat, it was still comforting, creamy and satisfying.  This is the sort of dish that makes us wish we had a Chinese grandmother.

And… BONUS, Man Chun Hong is open for the holidays.

Guilty Pleasures — on the Road

Cinn-A-stack Pancakes

Traveling & road trips are fun.  They’re the perfect excuse to indulge in the worst sorts of guilty pleasures with only minimal guilt.  Why?  You’re in some state of fatigue.  Always.  You’re hungry.  Usually.  And, most importantly, you’re in a city full of strangers.  There’s no one there (that you know) to witness your descent into decadence and debauchery.

Under normal circumstances, we’d avoid the Ihop as if it were diseased.  But, if we’re on the road?  The gloves are off.  Good judgement is thrown out the window.  Pancakes doused in two types of sugar-rich sauces sound perfect.  Sign us up.  Cinnastack pancakes… We are there.  First, the pancakes are schmeared with a layer cinnamon icing.  Then, for good measure, they’re drizzled with a buttery sugar glaze.  The lily is gilded with a huge dollop of whipped cream.  Who needs maple syrup?  This is a sugar rush without a drop of syrup needed.

Fruit Salad with Granola & Pepto Bismol Pink (Strawberry?) Yogurt

Then, a bowl of fruit is used to confuse the body.  It neutralizes the guilt and washes away all of the empty calories.  Did we really eat that?  No one will ever know.

Skybars, Zotz, and Pop Rocks… oh my

Skybar & Zotz

All I want for Christmas is a stocking full of quirky candies…

I’m not sure when skybars were popular (if ever).  But, according to the Necco website, they were introduced in 1938.  So, maybe my grandmother would have been a fan.  She was born in NYC around that time.

What do they taste like?  We don’t know yet.  We’re saving them for Christmas.  Along with some…

Pop Rocks — Candy Cane Flavor

And, if Santa’s listening…

We’d love a couple dark chocolate coffee crisp bars.  We fell in love with those in Canada a couple years ago.

Sweet Factory

(Sweet Factory also has a small shop in the Town Center Cobb.  Some vintage candies can be found there.)

The “it” Bar

The “it” Bars

Dark Chocolate with Pretzel Bits & Dark Chocolate with Peppermint Crunch

We really wanted to like these.  Peppermint crunch and pretzel bits are interesting additions to any chocolate bar.  And, dark chocolate is our favorite.  These were sure to be an easy win, right?  Wrong.  The chocolate had a nice snap.  But, it was quite bland.  It lacked all of the rich, yet, complex bitterness that we love in dark chocolate.  What else do we love?  We love the way that the best chocolate starts to melt onto your tongue almost instantly.  Not here.

These were nice… middle of the road bars.

Dylan’s Candy can be found at select Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s, and Macy’s in the US.
(And, Holt Renfrew offers Dylan’s Candy in Canada.)

The Silver Skillet

The Coffee

The Biscuits

Warm biscuits with delicate, yet crisp, outer layers that conceal fluffy, soft interior.  We could have happily made a breakfast out of this basket.  No butter needed, the biscuits are a meal onto themselves.

The Southern Breakfast

Two fried pork chops, grits (cheese added… underneath), two eggs, country gravy and biscuits.

Skillet Country Ham

…with red eye gravy

We think this might be the real Southern breakfast.  Don’t let the dark color fool you.  This slice of ham was exceptionally tender.  And, the salty red eye gravy was filled with all of the meaty flavor from the brown bits sautéing in the pan.  Yes, it’s salty.  But, isn’t that the point of country ham?  Suddenly, the biscuits and grits make a world of sense.  We both have newfound appreciation for country ham.

But, it’s not all about the food.  It’s the big picture.  From the building, to the booths & counter, to the charming staff… there is a comforting feeling of having been somewhere special.  Somewhere real.  This is a diner that has weathered the storm of many hard years and built a place for itself in Atlanta’s history.

3 Dollar Cafe

Hot Buffalo Shrimp

Crisp (heavy) breading covers each nice-sized shrimp.  Well-doused with hot sauce, these offer good heat with a little zing of vinegar.  Normally, we’d prefer a lighter breading.  But, somehow these work… very addictive.

Hot Buffalo Wings

Ask for extra crispy.  It brings out the flavor of the chicken and keeps the wings crisp under their layer of hot sauce.  We gobbled these up… fast.

Tangerine Juice

Freshly Squeezed Tangerine Juice

We fell in love with Flamingo Gardens‘ (the best) tangerine juice years ago.  But, this is a close second.  Mellower and sweeter than your standard orange juice, it’s the perfect breakfast juice.  (Straight or in a cocktail… that’s up to you)

Righteously Raw — Acai & Goji

Righteously Raw Superfood Truffles — Acai & Goji

We had high hopes.  The ingredients are organic.  There’s no refined sugar, no soy, no dairy and they’re gluten free.

We’re sure they’re healthier than a standard chocolate bar due to the berry and fruit paste fillings.  But, to call them truffles… that sets expectations too high.  They’re both closer to energy bars in terms of taste.  The chocolate is a bit waxy and grainy.  Fruit paste fillings have the sourness that you’d expect from acai and goji berries.  And, the goji bar filling has a particularly coarse texture with rather gritty seeds.  Interesting? …yes  Craveable? …not so much.

BBQ Pork Roll

The contrast of rich pork and bright, fresh herbal greens is divine… love.

Fried Rice

Chock full of sausage and shrimp, the fried rice and bbq pork rolls might not be the most well-rounded meal.  But, it’s yummy.  And, perfect for two people to share.  So, you don’t feel too guilty when you order this…

Banana Bubble Shake

Sweet, smooth & creamy banana with chewy tapioca balls shooting into your mouth at random, it’s a perfect dessert.

…frigid weather be damned.
