Ayala’s Lemongrass Mint Vanilla Herbal Water Water flavored with lemongrass, vanilla and spearmint extract… light, refreshing, and sugar free! (Zero calories, to be exact) I’ll take this over Vitamin Water any day. World Market For more flavor options, check out their website: Herbal Water Busy Bee’s Fried Chicken At a time when we’re all giving thanks. We can’t think of a more deserving restaurant to offer our thanks. No matter how busy, there is a warmth to Busy Bee Cafe. Is it the small space that forces you to mingle with other eager diners or the effortless charm of the staff? Whatever the source, there is an undercurrent of joy that fills the room even when it’s bursting to capacity. Thank you, Busy Bee… for many years of dining pleasure.
The Perfect Piece While all of the chicken is delicious, the breast showcases the genius of Busy Bee to perfection. Served piping hot, it’s best to let that huge piece of chicken sit for a moment or two. Don’t rush. Let it rest, your wait will be rewarded. After a couple short minutes, you take that first perfect bite off of the meatiest portion of breast. The warm rush of juices beneath that crispy, flaky crust remind you why this chicken is the best. And, that gorgeous skin… so crisp. Yet, somehow, it almost evaporates under your bite.
Cornbread, Broccoli Casserole & Fried Okra Comforting, creamy, and crispy… each one of these sides satisfies a craving. And, they’re all worth every minute on the treadmill. Next time… the beef short ribs. Busy Bee Cafe Portrait of a Bartender
Old Fashioned
Trout & Grits with Swiss Chard
Jerk Meatballs with Stewed Plantain
Coca Cola Cake with lime pudding & ice cream We had a lovely meal. H Harper Station Rib Plate with Mac & Cheese and Collard Greens Tender, smoky and full of flavor… what more could you ask for in your bbq’d ribs? The baked mac & cheese had plenty of toasty brown cheesy bits and collards had that distinctive old-fashioned style bitterness. “Peggie’s Jumbo Pork Sammich” The edges had a heavy dose of sauce, but, the interior was pure tender, smoky pork. We both loved the sandwich. One part sloppy joe-esque bbq sauce… 3 parts smoky pork bbq. We didn’t notice much crispy bark. But, it was barely missed. These sandwiches could easily become a habit. We ended the meal with a hunk of lightly glazed lemon bundt cake. Fresh & moist with a tender crumb, we had no problem scarfing down every last bite. Crazy Ron’s BBQ Menu Check out their hours. They close early… especially on Sunday.
Crazy Ron’s Handmade BBQ Sign
Big Flavor… Small Space Their sign almost dwarfs the small building decorated to resemble a bright red train car.
And, if you hurry…. you might be able to order a smoked turkey. Crazy Ron’s Bar-B-Q
Einstein Bros. Pretzel Bagels It’s been years since we’ve wandered into an Einstein Bros. The lure of a pretzel bagel instigated a visit. The heavily salted pretzels are quite tasty. But, there is a doughiness to Einstein’s bagels that keeps them from being truly crave-worthy. We also tried the pumpkin and pumpkin crunch bagels. They were fine in an acceptable, but, almost forgettable way. The one memory is a heavy handed use of pumpkin pie spice that left an almost bitter aftertaste. The selection of vigorously whipped sweet schmears resemble icing more than a cream cheese spread. The pumpkin schmear was a dead ringer for a flavored cream cheese icing. On the day of our visit (Sunday) they were giving away $5 off gift cards for the next visit. So, we might give them another chance. We’ll be hoping for a batch of pretzel bagels salted with a lighter hand. Can you see the line to the Dali exhibit? 3 Meat Burger Sirloin, brisket & hanger…. or was it sirloin, brisket & chuck? We can’t remember. It was a nice flavorful burger topped with a huge hunk of powerful blue cheese. But, after viewing one of our favorite exhibits, we were hoping for something a bit more like this burger.
Nicely poached eggs, delicate crab, pretty greens and a dreadfully ordinary muffin. Circles of toasted brioche would have added a pleasant lightness with a buttery yum in the background. Table 1280 Beef Salad on a Bed of Raw Cabbage Fish sauce has a powerfully pungent kick. Yet, somehow, the scent of raw cabbage leaves dominate here. Cabbage is not a favorite of ours. A bed of almost a dozen raw cabbage leaves have a surprisingly strong aroma. So, it’s possible that bias drew our focus away from the dish itself. In fact, it’s more than possible. Lots and Lots of Cabbage Soft Shell Crab Lettuce Wraps Our crab was fried perfectly. The exterior was crisp, golden brown and miraculously light & airy, while the interior remained moist and full of rich crab flavor. Served piping hot, it was a pleasure to wrap the sizzling crab pieces with cool lettuce leaves and herbs. …What a lovely contrast. Rendang Chicken Spiced oil covers the plate, the first sign hinting at the richness of this dish. Those same rich flavors will bring us back for another visit some time soon. This might not be our favorite version of this dish. But, it held our interest. We spent some time discussing the blend of sweet and savory spices. And, a bright acidic tang from… is that tamarind? Dark thigh meat added an incredible depth of flavor to this dish that would be lacking with only white meat. And, slow stewing gave that thigh meat a tenderness and richness that was reminiscent of red meat. Saigon Gourmet
…Same as it ever was. Oops, that’s the Talking Heads. But, it is just as tasty as it ever was.
Very sloppy… knife & fork required. But, that won’t stop us from ordering this again.
