Rita’s Gelati

Vanilla/Island Fusion Gelati

Thick & creamy soft serve vanilla ice cream is paired with island fusion Italian ice.  Nice, but, the island fusion gets too sweet… too fast.  Note to self, next time, ask for more ice cream and less ice.

Chocolate/Vanilla Gelati

Rich, thick, creamy, & custardy chocolate soft serve ice cream with vanilla ice… now this was really good.  Even with the temperature dropping daily, we want more.

Papa Rellena

Mashed potatoes are stuffed with chopped beef, onion and olives then formed into the shape of a potato.  A red onion salad pretties up the plate and adds a nice burst of vinegar and delicate heat to this meat & potatoes dish.  For one person, this could be a meal.  For two, it’s a perfect start to the meal.

Papa Rellena Before Sharing

Reluctant to let the creamy salsa go to waste, we put the table bread to use.  We enjoyed sopping up every last drop of the stuff.

Aji de Gallina

When the weather turns cold, we’re drawn to the rich, creamy sauces sauces that ooze comfort food appeal.  Strips of chicken and potato chunks are buried under this sauce that’s like a great big Peruvian hug.  Given the side of rice, there may be a touch too much potato in this dish.  But, we didn’t mind.

Pollo Encebollado

One beautifully golden brown chicken paillard topped with a stir fry of tomatoes, onions, parsley… and… is that soy?  I do believe it is.  This brought back happy memories of food eaten at the many Art and Food Festivals we were always visiting in Miami and South Florida.

Frog Jam

FROG Jam

Fig, raspberry, orange & ginger all rolled into one jam.  The flavors of raspberry and fig dominate.  Orange and a hint ginger contribute a nice background complexity.  Yum.  This is perfect for Thankgiving, Christmas and every holiday in between.  Visions of sugar plums dancing in our heads… definitely.

It was yummy on breakfast toast and it’s destined for turkey sandwiches at lunch.  Turkey Day sandwiches, too?  If it lasts that long.  Here’s to hoping.

Sausage Special

Three sausages served with a buttery pretzel, grainy mustard and an amber ale… or two.

Smoked Brisket Sandwich

Sliced paper thin, this smoky brisket has a mild & sweet barbecue sauce drizzled on top.  And, crispy waffle fries with house blue cheese dip cover the rest of the plate.

Each platter has a generous mound of waffle fries served with a little condiment cup of their blue cheese dip.

With the sweetness of their barbecue sauce and the egg roll, this sandwich takes a bit of the best of two worlds.  The sloppy joe sweetness adds the comfort food appeal.  While the smokiness of the brisket plants it on the fringes of being a bbq sandwich.  These flavors work well together… smoky bbq’d brisket with the sweet tomato-y flavors that hint of a sloppy joe.

Loaded Dawg Basket

Cheesy dawgs have a little bit of everything.  Chili, mustard, chopped onions, cheddar, and jack cheese… these dawgs are fully dressed.

And, there’s an interesting mix of locals to watch while you drink & nibble.

Green Tea Caramels & Curried White Chocolate Cashews

Green Tea Caramels, White Chocolate Curry Cashews & Dark Chocolate Pistachios

Green Tea Caramels

LOVED… The flavors of white chocolate and green tea work beautifully together.  But, when you add rich caramel to the equation it gets dangerously good.  These are addictive.

Curried White Chocolate Cashews

These were interesting.  A label we like to use when we’re undecided.  They weren’t a total failure.  Though, they’d be much more enjoyable if the cashews were unsalted.  The excessive amount of salt in this “sweet” is distracting.

Dark Chocolate Covered Pistachios

We loved these, too.  Even with fair to middlin’ dark chocolate, these were yummy and easy to nibble.

The Hickory Pig

Hickory Pig BBQ

Whoops… wrong door.  The real door is to the right of the sign.

Tender & smoky… no sauce was needed.  As a matter of fact, more sauce would have muted the smokiness.  Sometimes, the smoke can overpower the meat.  But, that isn’t a problem here.  The flavor of the pork is accented by the smoke… not overpowered by it.

The Brunswick stew was meaty, tomato-y, and tangy.  Possibly, a touch too mild on the spice for us.  We both prefer a good hit of black pepper in our stew.  But, we didn’t miss the lima beans.

Honestly, we couldn’t believe the flavor of this chicken.  When, we noticed the chicken was boneless, we were instantly skeptical.  After one bite, we were set straight.  We’ve never seen boneless chicken with this much flavor.  We’re not sure how many pieces we were given.  (at least three)  But, we do believe they were all boneless thighs.  Some pieces (the best ones) came with crispy skin attached.

Saving the best for last…

The pulled pork was unbelievably tender.  It might just be the most tender pulled pork we’ve ever had the fortune to taste.  Sometimes, that tenderness comes at the expense of smoky flavor.  That is definitely not an issue here.  This meat is smoky, tender and full of rich pork flavor.  If it’s this good every time, it’ll be worth the drive.

Their website recommends calling first.  Sometimes, they close for catering events.  But, is this the number?  Or, is it 770-503-5235?

And, look!  Someone to sharpened your chainsaw while you dine on luscious bbq.

After a hearty barbeque feast, we drove into the mountains to take in the fall colors and do a little hiking.  With the colors shaping up to be even more gorgeous this weekend, we might have to repeat the trip this weekend.

Musubi & Shave Ice

Pineapple Shave Ice with Coconut Ice Cream

As expected, this was a killer combination.  Creamy coconut ice cream and sweet pineapple syrup created a layered frozen pinita colada (virgin pina colada).  Summer in a glass…

Very yummy.

Next time?  I’m thinking… mango shave ice & coconut ice cream

Spam Musubi

We noticed this on Waikikie BBQ’s menu on our first visit years ago.  Two non-fans of Spam are we.  So, we’ve never gotten around to ordering.  Until now.  But, it’s gotta be said… it didn’t suck.  Thankfully, the flavor of the spam is almost lost under the sauces.  Only a savory, rich meat-like flavor comes through.  And, the saltiness is muted by the rice.  (another positive)  One of us puts it firmly in the “not bad” category with a slim chance of growing on them.  The other?  A vague “eh” was given some consideration before being declared as the current standing.

There’s a lot of great local food to be had at Waikikie BBQ.  The shave ice?  Hell yeah!

The musubi?  A qualified yes…

East Pearl

Fried Dungeness Crab with Crispy Garlic & Pork

This dish was just about perfect.  It was billowing steam as it arrived to the table.  All of the crispy bits were crispy while the crab on the inside remained tender and moist.

Fried Salt & Pepper Shrimp

These shrimp were huge.  In the past we’ve seen much smaller shrimp used in this dish.  But, it’s not all about size.  This was another dish served piping hot, crispy on the outside and moist & tender on the inside.  And, the shrimp had an incredibly rich flavor.  We loved them.

Phoenix Eyes (Or Shrimp & Shark Fin Dumplings)

These were lovely.  The shrimp were tender and full of flavor.  And, the glass noodles had an interesting bite that added texture.

Siu Mai or Shao Mai

Normally, the richness of the pork and dense texture add an air of heaviness to these dumplings.  But, here, the delicate texture of the pork added lightness.  The pork was so tender it nearly melted in our mouths.

Lotus Leaf Rice (or Lo Mai Gai)

Inside the lotus leaf, glutinous rice surrounds a filling of Chinese sausage, mushrooms, water chestnuts and other meaty bits.  We love the fragrance that escapes when you unwrap the package of rice.

Chao Tom

Mild shrimp paste is mounded on one end of a sugar cane stick.  It’s breaded… then deep fried.  Somehow, this is never a favorite of ours.  But, it’s fun to dip into both spicy and sweet sauces.

Gau Choi Gow

These dumplings of shrimp and chives are delicately pan fried… always a favorite.

Gai Mei Bau

Flaky sheets of pastry are wrapped around lightly sweetened coconut filling.  These are a great way to end the meal.  The feathery light layers of pastry melt away to almost nothing as you bite into them.

Haam Sui Gok (or Ham Sui Gok… AKA “The Footballs”)

Someone had to order one more thing…

Even though we were stuffed well beyond capacity.  He loved them.  It’s hard not to love deep fried mochi filled with bites of seasoned pork.  The mildly sweet mochi complements the savory salty porky filling.  ( I was too stuffed to try another bite.)
