Potato Pancakes with Mushroom Gravy

These tender, fluffy crepes were the highlight of our meal. Stuffed, fried and covered in more of that homey mushroom gravy, they were fabulous. I can’t wait to eat these again when the cold weather moves into town. We’ll be craving a good, hearty stick-to-your-ribs sort of meal. And, these will hit the spot … just right. You know food is something special when it has you craving the cold weather.

This platter of fried fish was rather heavily breaded. The dense clunkiness of it wasn’t our favorite. I doubt we’d order it again. But, the charm of the staff and the home-made feel of their food magically made everything taste just a little bit better. So, we didn’t really mind.

Chorizo, Al Pastor, & Lengua Tacos

Devoured at light speed… The al pastor and lengua (tongue) were fabulous.

Diablo Shrimp

These shrimp were a good size. And, as you can see, the serving was beyond generous. There was good amount of heat in the deep red sauce… just right with the rice and mild beans.

This place is more than a little bit rough around the edges. A diamond deep in the rough, you could say. But, some good food is hidden in plain sight.

Mi Pilon

Roast pork, fried plantains & black beans with rice

Tender roast pork with richly flavored pan juices and fried ripe plantains with crispy caramelized bits… beyond yummy.

Braised beef with black beans and rice

The beef was a bit too salty. But, that won’t stop us from visiting Mi Pilon again.

Many dishes at Mi Pilon are displayed in a heated glass case. On our visit, the glass case was in the process of being filled with fresh new trays. I’m sure this contributed to the enjoyment of our meal… particularly, the tender, moist and crazy-good pork.

Elderflower Syrup @ Ikea

Elderflower Drink & Syrup

We’re both fans of St Germain liqueur. (The delicate floral liqueur that hints of sweet white flowers baking in the summer sun, honey and some sort of wispy barely-there taste of citrus and lychee.) So, we were happily surprised to see elderflower juice drinks and syrup at Ikea. We were skeptical that these inexpensive drinks would have the depth and complexity of the addictive liqueur. It’s true. They do lack the depth of flavor and intensity of St Germain. But, they do have the delicate, sweet floral essence that makes St Germain so incredibly unique. It’s just a more muted version. We’ll be adding this to our cabinet of bar supplies for additional testing.

Swedish Mustard

We can’t say this is one of our favorite mustards. It’s more mild (bordering on sweet) than the German and French mustards we prefer. But, it’s better than most grocery store varieties. And, for $2.50 it’s a deal. We’d pick this over a standard yellow mustard any day of the week.

Hazelnut Milk Chocolate

This bar reminds us of the Lost “Dharma Initiative” food with its nearly generic logo. It’s fine. We’d rank it slightly above a convenience store chocolate bar… fairly similar in taste to a Milka bar with chopped hazelnuts.

Vosges

Vosges Gianduja Bar

Gianduja (or Gianduia) = Chocolate Hazelnut Praliné

What’s better than chocolate? Chocolate with hazelnuts… in any form. This milk chocolate bar is smooth, creamy and decadently rich. Yet, it’s still all about the hazelnuts. If nutella had a sexier, more elegant sister… it would be this candy bar. Love it.
