Cadbury Turkish & Walnut Whip

Cadbury Turkish & Walnut Whip

English Cadbury Turkish

To be brief, this chocolate bar tastes like chocolate covered essence of grandmother.  The overpowering floral essence combined with the artificial chocolate flavor is one brutally awful combination.  The word vile hovers within grasp.

We were under the delusion that English Cadbury was a step up to the domestic variety.   We’ve been set right to that misconception.  To be crystal clear, it is not.

Walnut Whip

If we were to describe the chocolate covering this marshmallow fluff as mediocre, we’d be extremely generous.  Yes, that would be an extremely generous description.

The highlight of this calorie wasting chocolate is the walnut crumb on top.

Fox Bros. BBQ Smoked Corned Beef

Smoked Corned Beef, Grainy Mustard & Onions on Texas Toast

Melt-in-your-mouth tender, smoky and not just moist, but, downright juicy.  This is one incredible sandwich.  Even sharing, we had a hard time finishing it.  Those slices of smoked corned beef are HUGE.  And, the collards are great as usual.

Smoked Chicken with White BBQ Sauce, Brisket Chili, & Spicy Beans

We’ve lost count on the number of times we’ve eaten Fox Brother’s smoked chicken.  (In the last month,we’ve ordered it at least 3 times)  Each half chicken was beautifully rubbed with spices, perfectly golden on the outside, and moist & tender on the inside.  Gorgeously prepared and delicious.

The spice rub (or lack of) left the bird a bit naked on this visit.  But, it was equally delicious.

This one was back to picture perfect perfection and delectable.  Check out that corn bread.  The slices are close to two inches thick every time.

The one negative?  If you’re dining at a prime time, you’ll probably have to search for a parking spot.

Paolo’s — Pistachio & Cannoli

Cannoli

Creamy, sweet, deliciousness with little bits of chocolate covered cannoli shells thrown in to make this utterly addictive.  But, even the small cup gets a bit too sweet by the end.

Pistachio & Cannoli

One of us cleverly thought ahead, a combination of pistachio and cannoli cut the sweetness.  Just right.  And, the pistachio… The pistachio at Paolo’s has maintained its position near the top of our favorite flavors for all time for years.

Gokul Sweets

Raj Kamal

Raj Kamal

These brightly colored balls gilded with silver have a soft doughy texture… not unlike play doh.  But, it’s a tasty play doh.  There seems to be a note of saffron, ghee and some other floral note.  It’s the subtle use of this floral note that keeps these sweets delicate, yet, hinting at the exotic.  Through a little research and the lotus flower shape, one obvious possibility might be lotus flower floral essence.  We didn’t expect to enjoy these as much as we did.  We’ll definitely choose these again.

Chandrakala, Raj Kamal, and Anjeer Katori

The chandrakala still tops our list of favorites.  It’s easy to love a crisp, nut-stuffed pastry that’s drenched in syrup.  The dried fruit and nut stuffed anjeer katori is heartier than most granola bars… not a favorite.  But, we still enjoy them.

And, another Dabeli… so good.  These sweet, nutty, spicy potato balls doused with tamarind and cilantro chutneys are genius.  Love them.

Vincent Bakery Cafe

Chestnut & Black Sesame

This is a favorite combination of ours.  Chestnut and black sesame.  The sweetness of the chestnut is the perfect companion to the dark nutty, smoky flavor of sesame.  And, the pastry dough is tender, caky and buttery.  This is one yummy pastry.  Love it.

Pumkin Manjoo (or Manju)

Sweet pumpkin filling… mmMMm… We’re ready for fall.

Pumpkin manjoo, Chestnut & Black Sesame, & Chocolate Bread filled with Buttercream

The chocolate bread is unbelievably light and fluffy.  A layer of rich buttercream filling is slathered in the middle.  Breakfast, snack or dessert… you choose.

Savage Pizza

The Cajun

Spicy red pepper sauce, andouille, shrimp, chicken, green pepper, onions & cheese

Yum.

White on Red

Thyme-spiced ricotta, Monterey Jack, mozzarella, chèvre, parmesean, and spicy red pepper sauce.  We frequently substitue the spicy red pepper sauce for the tomato sauces.

More yums.

We’re both quite fond of Savage Pizza.  Both, The Cajun and The Mexican pizzas remind us of a particular pizza shop in Florida that holds many memories.  So, for us, a visit to Savage is a bit like a quick trip to South Florida.  Whenever we get a little home sick, they offer us an oasis of happy memories along with their tasty pies.  Pies that aren’t at all traditional.  And, for that, we thank them.

The Goods @ Mediterranean Bakery

Green walnut preserves, date molasses, carob molasses and two ma’moul cookie presses…

This is just a small glimples into the three rows of dry and canned goods offered at Mediterranean Bakery.  They also have three refrigerated cases with cheeses, double cream, yogurt, yogurt drinks and an assortment of prepared goods.  And, don’t forget about the breads and pastries.  We’ll be grabbing more of those next time.

Mediterranean Bakery & Sandwich

Lovely and delicious, shreds of crispy dough are stuffed with pistachio and drizzled with honey.  The nutty richness of the pistachios keep this pastry from dipping into the too sweet category.

Each nicely charred piece of tender lamb on the kabob has a touch of pink at its core.  For this dish, we chose baba ghannouj and little stuffed grape leaves.  The tartness of both helped to add a glimmer of light to the rich lamb.  We both loved the rush of tart vinegar and lemon.  These were a hit with us.

The lamb kabobs deserve a closeup.  (even if it is a bit over-exposed)

Beef shawarma, hummus and falafel…

The small falafel guaranteed a bit of crunch in every bite.  With a generous heap of whole sesame seeds, the falafel had a great smoky, nutty taste.  Also rich in tahini, the hummus was a nutty and lemony mouthful of ground chickpeas.  I’m always amazed by my love of this simple dish.  Yum.  The beef shawarma was a bit on the tough side.  But, the rich spice rub added a ton of flavor.

This little shop jams a lot of goodness into an unusual space.  It’s a bakery, grocery & sandwich shop all in one.  It’s a real gem in the desolate strip mall it inhabits.

Oh yeah, they have hookah pipes and tobacco, too.

DBA BBQ

Bacon wrapped Shrimp

These little bacon wrapped shrimp were tasty.  But, we were hoping for something with more toasty, charry bits.  We would’ve preferred less bbq sauce, too.  The bbq sauce almost buried the taste of the shrimp.

BBQ Chicken with garlic green beans & collards

The chicken was perfect… tender, smoky and moist.  And, the sides were stellar.  The green beans were full of flavor with a fresh crispy bite and the right touch of butter and garlic.  The collard greens were great, as usual, with smoky bits of meat throughout.

Sweet ‘Tater Tots

These were new to us.  Sweet potato fries were still listed on the menu last weekend.  But, these crispy tots are taking their place.  They were perfectly crispy and golden brown with creamy centers.  Yummy.  But, we liked the sweet potato fries better.

Humbles & Nuts

Spicy Marcona Almonds

It’s nice when a food claiming to be spicy turns out to actually be spicy.  These rich almonds had a lovely dusting of smoky, fiery spices.  We both agreed, a touch less salt would be nice.  But, they were still finger lickin’ good.

Humbles

These crispy hummus chips are lower in fat than potato chips and offers 3 grams of protein in a one ounce serving.  Better than a potato chip?  Yes.  But, one ounce?  I hope you’re not too hungry.

Ultimate Plus Bar

Also known as black sesame brittle…  But, I love this clever packaging.  Black sesame brittle is high in calcium  and iron.  So, now, I don’t have to feel guilty eating it, right?

Ciabatta Rolls

These were a real bargain.  No, they’re not a day old (or, at least they weren’t at the time).  These were fresh rolls made that day.  They made too many.  So, there was a huge basket of rolls for sale.  They did lose the crisp exterior in the plastic bag.  But, they stayed fresh longer than any ciabatta we’ve ever purchased at Alon’s.  We finished the last one today.  And, it was surprisingly good.
